NEW WORKS AND THEIR COST. A schedule which has been issued of tramway works to bo caried out, and projected, for the year ending Starch 31, 1909, contains some points of differenco from- tho last previous report of this kind. Tho estimated cost of land for a pay-in office at Thorndon is increased from £250 to £3000, and of the building from £593S to £6000, making a total increase from £6188 to £9QOO. Tho former sum of £250 was for rent of temporary office premises during occupation. Tho cost of land for a carshcd at Kilbirnie is increased from £800 to £1000. A now item appears, "Street widening oft Island Bay line, £1000." The estimated expenditure on works recommended to be carried out during the year, according to the schedule, is £4-7,637. ELECTRIC LIGHTING. The following statement shows the amount expended on capital account in connection with the elcctric lighting department, with estimated expenditure on new works, and funds available to meet such expenditure:— Debentures issued to Elcctric Light Company, £160,000; amount advanced by District Fund to March 31, 1903, £9209; net profit for six months to March 31. 1903, £915; estimated net profit for year ending March 31, 1909, £6500; depreciation for eight months to March 31/ 1903, £3489; estimated depreciation for year ending March 31, 1909, £5419; total, £185,531: debit balance, £19,104. Tho estimated cost of new works, as shown in a previous report, is £33,100; and the value of general stores on hand at March 31, 1903, purchased out of revenue moneys, was £3452j making (with capital oxpended from August I', 1907, to March 31, 1903 £168,053), a total expenditure of £204,635.
