Rowlands (formerly of Cliristckurch), started a twenty-four hours' walk at tho Stadium. T. E. Hammond beat all records after 50 miles—including tho 100 miles in 18hr. 4min. lOsec.—and finally covered 131 miles 585 yds. Horton was second, doing 121 miles, and Wakefield covered US miles. Rowlands retired after 15 hours' walking. According to "Miller's Sporting Pamphlet" for 1908, the greatest distance walked in 21 hours was 127 miles 1210 yards, by W. Howes, on February 23, 1878, in England. Hammond has beaten this by nearly four miles. W. Howes' former record ■ for 100 miles was 18 hours 8 minutes 15 seconds, and was put up in England on May 15, 1880. In 1901 Hammond walked 52 miles in 8 hours 26miuutes 57 2-5 seconds; in 1907 he covercd 54i miles (on road) in 8 hours 51 minutes 14 2-5 seconds, nnd 104J miles (also on the road, London to Brighton and back), in 18 hours 13 minutes 37 seconds. i
