HUTT AND PETONE NEWS.
♦ A detachment of the Petono Navals under Captain Freeman, and some forty of the Putt Valley Rifles under Captain Boss attended a church parade at St. Augustine's Church yesterday morning. The Rev. J. D. Russell preached. Captains Freeman and Ross read the lessons. The Citizens' Brass Band gave another of their open-air concerts on the Recreation Ground yesterday afternoon. The wind was rather strong, so the band played in the enclosure next the grandstand. The programme submitted was: March, " Stars and Stripes"; selection, "Verdi's Works"; intermezzo, "Iola" ; sketch, "Sliding Jim"'; waltz, " Baracoa " ; fantasia, "Ravensdale"; galop, " The Express." A collection was taken_ up at the gates towards the expenses of going to tho band contest. Tho Rev. Mr. Williams niado n very good impression at the Baptist Church yesterday, and had a good congregation. Rapid progress has been mado with tho construction of tho new Melling Bridge, and a very fair idea of, tho appcaranco of tho structure when finished may now be formed. 'J'he bridgo will ho available for traffic in tho very near future. Thcro was not a very largo audience in tho Town-Hall, Lower Hutt, to hear Miss Hughes owing largely to counter attractions. His Worship tile Mayor (Mr. F. A. Peterkin) presided, and briefly introduced Miss Hughes. Miss Hughes, who is a rapid speaker, addressed tho audience for upwards of an hour, dealing with the various phases of the NoTiiccnao question, and kept lier audicnco fully interested with incidents both humorous anil pathetic.
