BROWN SHIELD TOURNAMENT. WELLINGTON VICTORIOUS. (by telegraph—press association.) Dunedin, September 12. Ideal conditions prevailed for the Association Brown Shield final at Carisbrook Ground. Tho attendance numbered 2000. Mr. H. Mayer, of Wellington, acted as referee. The teams were as follow:— Otago — Knowles; Young and Harrison; Milton, Ratley, and Grenfield; Clyde, Timlin, Baillio, Ussher, and M'Clelland. Wellington — Oldnall; Roberts and Duignan; Thorley, Taylor, and Jackson; Forbes, O'Shea, Gibson, Ash, and Roddy. . Otago faced a strong sun, which did not troublo Wellington in the second spell. In the first spell Otago attacked frequently, encouraging tho idea that they would win. M'Clelland, Ussher,. and Baillie combined successfully, tho first-named sending in somo beautiful centres and shots, and Baillie using hjs head judiciously. Oldnall, however, kept his goal superbly. Twenty minutes after the start, Reduy screwed in to Gibson, who tricked tho Otago backs, and scored neatly for Wellington. A free kick to Otago was put in by Young, and a judicious placo by llatley produced a scramblo in front of Wellington's goal. Baillie gathered in smartly, and drove hard and low into the not, making tho scores evon. One minute beforo half-, time, weak play by Harrison allowed a chanco to Ash, whoso sharp shot glanced off Young's foot into tho net, making Wellington, 2; Otago,' 1. In tho second spell Wellington showed marked superiority all round; superiority in woiglit and training, and experience in "shepherding" gave them tho advantage over tho smaller Otago men, who, however, played poorly, being quito outclassed. Early in the second half Milton placed in to Baillie, who hooked into goal, where Usslier headed splondidly past Oldnall, making the scores two all. Soon after, good work by Forbes placed the ball at the/ toe of Ash, whoso ground shot found tho net, giving Wellington tho lead by one goal. - Just beforo time O'Shea steadied, and, with a swinging left foot drive, scored Wellington's fourth and final goal. . ' The visiting teams were entertained by Otago at a smoke social, at which tho shield was presented to Wellington, by i;ho Mayor of, Dunedili'. 1 , 1,1 'NOTES ON THE PLAY! (BI TELEGRAPH. —SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT.) Dunedin, Sept-ember 13. Tho superior play of Wellington over Otago was responsible for tho shield coming back to Wellington. It was in the forward division that (Wellington excelled. Tho back rank of Otago was undoubtedly weak. M'Lolland, of Otago, was tho star, and his stylo of play proved too much for Shirley at half. Ash. did much to concentrate, the play in tho Wellington attack, and was ably assisted by Roddy. Gibson gave tho impression of being too slow, but his long reaches with tho foot made up for his deficiencies. Had Gibson passed the hall more in the first half Wellington would have notched more goals. Taylor justified tho selector in placing him in tho centre, as well as making him captain. His placing of the ball was everything that could bo desired. Jackson was a half who had to bo reckoned with. His finessing of tho ball on the line proved too scientific for tho dashing Otago forwards. Roberts and Duignan proved worthy of their hire. Oldnall saved his side time and again. His play was attractive and solid, and had he orred on three occasions • Wellington would have lost the shield. The game was watched by a large number of spectators, and tho prevailing opinion was that Wellington doserved its win. POSITION OF THE TEAMS. Tho following table shows the relative positions of tho competing teams at tho conclusion of the tournament. (Note. —The losing team in each match automatically dropped out of the competition):—
PREVIOUS WINNERS. The Brown Shield Tournament was instituted in 1892, in which year Wellington carried oft' the honours. The following year the shield went to Otago,- and was not again restored to Wellington until 1903. Three years later, in 19013, Wellington again captuted the trophy. Last year the shield was won by Auckland. Tho list of previous winners is as follows. — 1892 Wellington 1893 Otago 1894 Canterbury 1895 Auckland 1890 ;.. Auckland 1897 Ruahine 1898 ... • Auckland 1900 Otago 1901 Otago 1903 Wellington 1906 Wellington J 907 Auckland SENIOR SECOND DIVISION. CHALLENGE CL T P PINAL. Tho final match for tho Senior Second Division Challenge Cup ( was played at tho Basin Reserve on Saturday, Swifts and Wanderers being the aspirants for the honours. The game, which was witnessed by about 500 spectators, resulted in a draw, one all, after a somewhat indifferent exhibition of football. The first spell was colourless, and barren of results. The second spell, howover, was more interesting. The contestants livened up considerably, and towards the latter half of tho spell, consequent upon a score by Moffat - (Swifts), from a free kick near their opponents' goal, tho gamo became quito exciting. Wanderers retaliated about ten minutes after tho enemy had drawn first blood, Taylor scoring from a combined rush on the goal. From then until tho call of time, the tide of battlo surged to and fro, but tho defence of the back divisions of both sides was solid, and tho gamo ov-ontually ended: —Swifts —1, Wanderers—l. For tlio Swifts, probably the best form and; scienco wero shown by Wilson, Hunter, ■ and M'Leaii. r Taylor, Pickering, Hatchor, and Barker, among the Wanderers, wore perhaps tho most useful men on their side. Mr. H. .Waters refereed.
