I . INFANT'S BODY FOUND. ! Chrlstchurch, September 13.' . ' il ? . yof , a male infant was found on the bank of . the Avon River i at'. Burwood yesterday. It appears-that Herbert Downes , was out hunting hares, when his which' ■ near the bank of the. river, '.began' to | bark, and on going over he discovered' the , body- of a male child lying face, downwards i, with a string' round the' neck. The body had been in l the water for sometime. At i i!? e , '. n 9 ues t to-day Constable Rowe stated : that in response to a message he-visited the I locality where; the , body' was found.- Tho string was three or four times, double round the neck, and the .end appeared','as'if !a weight had been tied to. it and had brpken away. • Dr. Irving,' who made the " jiostmortem, could not say definitely 'if- the' child had ever lived. The body was fully developed, and newly born, but was in a very decomposed state. Some parts were missing. The string ivaß not tight round the neck, • though it liad cut deeply into the flesh. Tho child had been, dead too long to say whether the string had been put there during life, - The child had been properly born.. . V A fire occurred about ,1.20, o'clock this--morning' in a building situated, in Hereford Street occupied .by the Remington "Typewriter Company, Mr. W. Harvie . (artist), Marshall's Proprietary Company, Sims, ■ Cooper, and . Co., and Mr. W. ,W. Davies ". (dentist). The portion tenanted by Mr. Harvia . was completely burnt, whi|e -the rooms bccu-|' pied by Mr. Marshall, were slightly damaged before the-briga'de extinguished the fire.
