FIRE IN THE CITY.
THE SKATING RINK DAMAGED. The Olympia Skating Rink, at tho cornor of Vivian Street and Knigge's Avenue, was the scene of an outbreak of firo at 4.47 yesterday morning. Tho fire brigado was quicldy on the spot, but tho flames had a good hold when the brigadesmen arrived. A strong supply of' water helped the firefighters, who got tho flames in check after a struggle. . The building was severely damaged, tho fire going right through the interior, and. doing most "damage on'the side of the building facing Knigge's Avenue. Tho outbreak started about the centre of the rink, where a rubbish-box, containing a number of partially smoked cigarettes, was found. It is considered probable that someono who had been smoking may have dropped a lighted cigarette into the box, and thus caused the outbreak. The. rink had been leased by Mr. F. S..Yates during the winter months, and the skating season was only brought to a close on Saturday. , Mr. Yates had a considerable amount of property in the building, which, with tho greater part of the'contents, was severely damaged. Tho building was owned by Mr. T. G. M'Carth.v, and was insured in the Phoenix Offico for £1250. There was no insurance on tho contents. . Tho brigado was called out at 3.39 p.m. on Saturday to a private light of way off lugostre Street, where a packinc; case filled with straw was found to be on fire.
