Time did not permit tho Kaiser to cross I tho frontier for the purpose of visiting Hohneck (a peak of the Vosges on the border of France and Germany), but lie thanked the French Government for its courtesy in this matter. The Kaiser, replying to ijho burgomaster's address at Colmar (in Alsace-Larraine), expressed himself as touched by the great affection .and enthusiastic warmth of tho reception accorded to him everywhere in Alsace-Lorraine. Speaking of Colmar and the whole beautiful country whereof it formed a part, the Kaiser said:— " I joyfully watch their development. This development, thanks bo to God, will be brought to fruitage . under the protection of the German Eagle, and under my Standard; and please God it will never bo disturbed. The country has undergone vicissitudes, but is now able to extend and develop itself in poace,. for peace will be maintained and tho country will be able to flourish and thrive. Colmar and all Alsace may rest assured that they have a specially safe and warm corner in my heart."
