THE ATONEMENT.

: Sir,—There has been a great deal said and written of'late on the;subjcct of the Atonement, but they seem to me to bo disputing with oach other the authority of different theologians of the time,. leaving out the foundation, what God and Jesus Christ have said on the matter, and which ought to be final. As long as .we have free access to the Scriptures and God himself, as; the- Word has it, He is His own interpreter, and is to roako it plain to all. A theologian is not wanted if grace and faith are used. . There is no need , for the greater world's wisdom, or higher critics to discover needle points to balance our salvation:<on..Wo do .not look to these men,;, who-, are-, not- responsible for our salvation. These wise men are all right and very useful in the material world, but in the spiritual kingdom God- is His own revealer through the Holy Spirit. All Chris-' tians should make the words of Christ final 'in all. disputes as against' ■ all- others. The simplicity of the : Cross of Christ " has' always been a stumbling block and a rock of offence to the wise and disputer. Christ saw it in His day, and said: "I thank Theo, Heavenly Father, that. Thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and revealed them unto babes; nevertheless as it seemeth good in Thy sight. . . —I am,ctc., A BELIEVER IN THE SIMPLICITY OF' THE GOSPEL. September 7. [Portions of this letter have been omitted as not bearing on the points involved in the controversy.]
