PALMERSTON. A heavy thunder and hail storm passed over, Palmerston yesterday afternoon, and the weather is still cold. A movement is being made for the crection of a now Methodist church in Church Street. Constable Crozier, who has acted as gaoler hero for. some years, and who is retiring, was presented by the local police with a goldmounted walking stick. Constable Gleoson, of Wanganui, succeeds him, and started upon his duties yesterday. Thomas Gleeson, who was on Thursday found guilty of a broach of tho Bankruptcy Act, was sentenced yesterday morning to fourteen days' imprisonment. .The third annual ball of the Palmerston Railway staff passed' off successfully on Thursday evening. - MASTERTON. A young man named Ernest Edgar Cohen, clerk, in tho employ of C. E. Daniell, was charged at the Mastcrton Police Court yesterday . morning with obtaining the sum of £2 13s. from Daniell on terms requiring him to account for the same, and fraudulently converting the samo to his own use. : Mr, Eli Smith, J.P., occupied the. Bench. The case was remanded until Wednesday, next. The sergeant stated that ho understood - there were about nineteen or' twenty, similar charges pending against the accused, and he asked that bail be made substantial. Bail was, granted ill self £50 and two sureties of £50 each. - The members of Masterton Rifles and Mounted Rifles held a meeting on Thursday night, at-which it' was decidod to hold a military tournament on Boxing Day next, on the show grounds, if available. The tournament will be on the lines of that held at , Palmerston North on the King's Birthday. The Ladies' Swimming ; Club met yesterday. afternoon, Mrs. Blaokman presiding. The . annual report stated that the season ' ended in the month of April with a total of sixty-two financial members. It is proposed to open the season on October 1 provided the weather bo seasonable, and a swimming carnival will probably bo held .early in tile year 1910. Sirs. Blackman was re-elected president and Miss N. .Gillespie was re-elected hou. secretary and treasurer. The ordinary meeting of the Masterton School Committee was held on Thursday evening, Mr. R. Tho Education Board wrote notifying that tho question of forming an assembly room at the high school by roofing an area between two wings,' had been referred to the Board of Works ' Committeo for consideration.. The chairman' said the board's inspector had visited-the school in connection with the matter. : The speaker understood that.the board's committeo was favourable to the work, which was considered very necessary. The headmaster' reported that the attendance for the month has been highly satis-, factory. FEILDING. Yesterday morning the Mayor (Mr. W. J. B. Trewing) received a communication' from the Acting Under-Secretary of the Department of Justice in reply to a letter from his Worship regarding the proposed new courthouse for Feilding, stating that the plans are now in the hands of the Public Works Department, and they are expected tb bo ready in about a.fortnight's time. Messrs.-, G. C. Wheeler (chairman), Hugh Burrell, and W. G. Pearce, members of the Oroua County Council, have inspected the Oroua River, accompanied by the county engineer- (Mr. Roy L. Harding). Tie newly-erected Anglican Church at Reikorangi was opened on Thursday by the Ven. Archdeacon Fancourt, assisted bv the Rev. Messrs. Smith (Otaki) and Jones (Paraparaumu). The church is a small, but decidedly neat edifice, its dimensions being 28ft. x 16ft. It was built by Mr. Milgrew. The death occurred at the hospital yesterday of Mark, the 14-year-old son of Mr. Mark Ayre, at one time local stationmaster. The cause of death, was typhoid fever, followed by brain fever. The funeral takes place to-morrow. WOODVILLE. A Press Association message from Woodvillo states that a young man named Ernest George Mason was yesterday committed for trial on a chargo of indecent assault. /' FEATHERSTON. A meeting of tho Rifle Volunteers was held on Thursday evening, when it was decided to hold a military social on Thursday, October 1, Privates J. Hylahd, E. Walker, W. Hutchens, with Corporal G. Walker, W. Hutand Mr. W. Tucker.assistant secretary, wore appointed an executivo committee, It was decided to ask Mesdames M. B. Tait, T. Sheen, H. Wickens, E. G. Robertson, H. 1 Buck, and E. Hoskings to act as a ladies' committee, with power to add to their number. Messrs. C. Elliott, 0. Skipage, and W. Tucker were appointed doorkeepers. A committee was set up to issue the invitations, and it was decided to meet on Friday week. 'Tho monthly meeting of the Featherston County Council was held at. Martinborough on Friday, Councillor A. Matthews in the chair. The treasurer's statoment showed receipts £1421 10s.' 2d., and accounts amounting to £685 4s. 2d. were passed for payment. The application of Wilkinson and Lyford for a slaughterhouse license at l'auherenikau was approved. Tho transfer of J. T. Wliito's slaughterhouse licunso to Messrs. Purcell and -Vincent was approved. It was decided to recommend that, the grant of £150 for the To Awaito Road bo expended on the stretch between Waipoua and Cabbage Tree Flat.. A subsidy of £455 4s. was received from the Treasury. An account from A. E. O'Neale for drain cleaning was left to tho overseor and Councillor Jackson. The ranger reported having impounded 50 head of stock during tho month. Mr. E. J. Riddiford applied to have a blocked drain cleaned, and the matter was left to councillors on that Bide of the county. The Department of Roads wrote with reference to the application for a grant of £500 for Whangaehu-Whakarua, and stated the application would have consideration. '
