SERIES OP .THEFTS, " A young man named George Sturt pleaded guilty to a'charge of having, between June 1 and July 27, at Wellington, received tho sum of £1 10s.. on terms requiring him to account for the same to one Alfred Cooper, and did fraudulently\omit to so account for tho samo, thereby committing theft. The same accused also pleaded guilty to five further charges couched in the same language charging him with not accounting for sums of £1 Is. 10d., £1 6s. 5d., £1 os. 6d., £1 2s. 3d., and £2 Is. 4d,, belonging to Mr. Cooper. Chief-Detcctive M'Grath informed the Court that accused arrived from England in Dcccmbor last, coming out as a steward, on the steamer Fifeshire. He was employed on various coastal steamers .for a. time, aridthen .. entered the employ of Mr. Cooper, dairyman. After ho had .been in this 'em-ployment.-for six .weeks/he commenced svstomatie stealing. His method was to issue bill heads arid supply accounts of his own, destroying the accounts made up by his employer. Accused had been well-treated by. his employer, and had no reason to . commit the thefts. The chief detective remarked that offences of the kind were becoming too common, and suggested that a severe penalty was needed. His Worship imposed a sentence of three months' imprisonment on the first charge. Similar sentences were entered on each of the other charges, to run concurrently. OBSCENE LANGUAGE. Samuel Bray, charged with having 'used obscene language at Island Bay, was convicted and filled £4, and costs 165., in default 21 days' imprisonment. Mr. o'Regan appeared for accused. AN UNREGISTERED DAIRY. The Stock Department has recently laid : several informations against milk vendors' who have failed to register their dairies, the actions being taken in the interests of the dairy ■ industry .and of the. public, the Department having no control over a dairy unless it is registered. . George Bell, through his solicitor, Mr. O'Leary, pleaded guilty to having failed to register his dairy, and was convicted and fined 10s., and costs £1 Bs., in default 48 hours' imprisonment. His Worship remarked that the maximum penalty for the offence was £50, and stated that dairymen must register their dairies before selling. milk. MISCELLANEOUS. A prohibition order, to have twelve months' currency, was issued against Michael Ryan, who failed to appear, the order to have cffect in tho Wellington, Newtown, and Hutt Licensing districts, , On tho application of the police a middleaged man named John Butler was remanded until September 16 on a charge of-having, on September 10, assaulted Mildred Butler with intent to do- grievous bodily harm.. Three first offenders for drunkenness wore brought forward, each being convicted and fined 55., .in default 24 hours' imprisonment. Ilenvy M'Laughlin was remanded to appear at Auckland on a chargo of failing to provide his wife with adequate means of maintenance.
