AMATEUR BOXING.
ONE NEW ZEALAND WINNER OUT OF FOUR SENT. (DJ TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPtRI3 ST.) Brisbano, September 10. The finals for the amateur boxing championships resulted: — Bantam. —J. Cnntwell (Queensland) beat Fenn Lusher (New South Wales). Feather-weight.—W. Elliott (New Zealand) 'beat R. Cantwoll (Queensland). Light-w6ight.—J. Dagley (Queensland) beat Graham (Victoria). ■ Middle-weight.—Midwood (Tasmania) beat Delaney (Queensland). Welter.—E. Burn (New South, Wales) beat Salter (Queensland). —Heavy-weight.—D. Smith (New South Wales) beat W. Waldio (Victoria). ' Elliott, the winner of the feather-weight championship, was the only New Zealander who did not suffer defeat in the first round. His opponent, E. Cantwell (Queensland), competed . as a bantam-weight at the last championship, but was defeated by J. Parker (New Zealand). Early in 1907, shortly after his arrival from London, Elliott beat Gould, a clever Timaru boxer. At the Australasian amateur, championships, which were held in Wellington last September, he secured the honours in the feather-weight division, after defeating Fitzjohn (New South Wales) and 'fresize (New Zealand). An idea of his ability may be gauged by the fact that he was awarded the medal for best all-round exponont. He also holds the feather-weight championships of Southland and South Canterbury. Fenn-Lusher (New South Wales), who was beaten by J. Cantwell (Queensland) in the bantam-weight division, also competed at the last championships. On that occasion he accounted for Ben. Tracey (New Zoaland) and ' J. Parker (New Zealand). ' A feature of his boxing, which was of a very high standard, was his footwork and repeat blows.
