" Notwithstanding the unpleasantness'- •: ' and heat which has been imparted into this regrettable occurrence, I .here honestly assert that .at. no, time have I ever . believed you were actuated, by other' than honest convictions "according - to your lights,' but what I do wish to emphasise . is that, not alone in', tho : matter under review, but in matters generally, your ideals are too high. . You .expect, too> much from- poor, frail' human nature. You yourself endeavour to act up to those ideals, and'expect others to do the same, and thereby 'meet with disappointments.' Whether or-not you are to blame in settiug yom;. standard too high it would, perhaps, be | presumptuous on my part to offer an opinion." Inspector Macdonell served as a young , man in. the Inverness County Police. Ho camo to New Zealand in 1875. and at oncejoined the Otngo police under the late Commissioner Weldon. In ISS9 he replaced the. late Ser-geant-Major Ramsey iu Inrercargill, and when the'Otago and Southland Districts were amalgamated in. 1891 he remained in, chargo of the Invercargill sub-district .until 1599, when he was promoted and transferred to 'Wellington, whore he served for about nine months, when bo was given charge of the Westland and Nelson District as inspector.
