HOCKEY.

LADIES' TOURNAMENT. Porfect weather prevailed yesterday for the continuation of the ladies' hockey tournament fixtures at Day's Bay. A very large number of people took advantage of the weather conditions and the Duchess was crowded. A pleasant function was held at tho Arcadia yesterday morning, when tho visiting secretaries, managers, and captains were entertained at a luncheon by the Wellington Association. The "At Homo" will'be held at the Town Hall this evening, and a largo attendance is certain. The Hawke's Bay team is still in tho lead for tho championship, having scored 20 goals with only-2 against them. . Saturday next will be made a big day, and tho tournament will be brought to a conclusion. It is probable that a' match will bo played between Nelson and Wellington, and Hawke's Bay and Wairarapa. This would bo most, interesting, and would .be sure to draw a large number of spectators. Tho tournament proper will probably end to-mor-row. To-morrow the ferry' steamers will leave town at 10.15 a.m., 1.15 p.m., and 2.30 p.m., leaving Day's Bay at 4.25 p.m., 5 p.m., and 6 p.m. Amongst the attractions a string band will give selections on board the s.s. Duchess; • ... .. The following are the results of yesterday's play:— SENIORS. HAWKE'S BAY (4) v. WELLINGTON A (2). , The match of the day took place on No. 2 ground , between' Hawke's Bay and Wellington A ,in which the former were the'victors by 4 goals to 2. The" winners were decidedly superior to their opponents with tho exception of two positions. .Their hitting was harder and more accurate, and their combination was much better. Occasionally, the game was .fast. Within the first five minutes, Miss Wellwood scored ' for Hawke's Bay. Then Wellington took the play to their opponents' goal, • where it remained for a few minutes, and' the' defenders ' were repeatedly compelled to hit behind. Had Wellington shown, greater dash in tho circle, they would undoubtedly liavo scored several times. Hawke's Bay attacked vigorously;, but were repulsed by ■ sonio excellent play by Misses Gear and Doughty. Miss Tavondale dashed down the line, and by a good pass Miss Bisset was enabled to score for Wellington. Hawke's Bay then instituted a pretty piece of play. Miss Pitt outwitted Miss Gear, passed to Miss Wellwood, centra forward, and dashed for the goal. While Miss Pitt was running at top

speed the centre forward passed to her, and enabled her to score a pretty goal. The third goal was gained by Miss Wellwdod by a smart hit in. Play in the latter half was not so interesting—the visitors' passing was not so accurate, and they had not so much dash. Miss Crowley scored for tho visitors, and Miss Glasgow for tho Wellington representatives. Miss Gear and Miss Doughty were easily tho pick of the local players, while Miss Pitt, Miss Wellwood and Miss Bissell were prominent for Hawko's Bay. WAIRARAPA B (1) v. WELLINGTON B (0). ' An interesting match took place between Wairarapa , B and Wellington B on No. 3 ground. The former were almost continuously on the attack, and they should have scored frequently but their efforts were completely nullified by the failure of their forwards to come up and support their advance guard. Miss 0. Richards,:on tho wing, put m some splendid work, but there was no one ready to follow up the advantage. Wellington instituted one or two .attacks, but they were not successful. No scoro took place in the first half. The position remained unaltered with the change of ends, Wairarapa maintaining their attack and keeping their opponents strictly on tho defensive. Eventually, however, Miss Richards was successful in finding the net,.the result of a scramble at the posts. There lva , s .,' <) P muc h individual play, neither sido exhibiting any combination to speak of j , f . Hl "™> Wairarapa's right full-back, a ,i , s , Om' o Richards, right wing, did well for the winners. - JUNIORS. WELLINGTON A (1) v. HOROWHENUA (0). Wellington A defeated Horowhenua by one goal to nil on No. 1 ground. The game was hotly contested, particularly in the latter hair. The . first spell was oven, both sides having alternating advantages. After half-timo Wellington pressed hard and should have scored. Once they got the ball into the net, but it was disallowed through sticks. J.liey had several good chances shortly after,n. ?{, iv , the shots ,vont a little wide, the Wellington attack was maintained, and Miss Polly M'Kcnzio secured a.goal, tho result of a tussle at the posts. Horowhenua bccamo dangerous just after this, but thoy. could not penetrate tile defence. From this out both sides played determinedly, but noithcr could find their way to tho net. ■ WELLINGTON B (2) v. WANGANUI (0). Wellington B beat Wanganui by two goals to nil on No. 2 ground. The winners had the advantage in tho first half, exccpt for a spirited attack-by Wanganui. Then Wellington's efforts resulted in two goals, one by Miss M. M'Donald and the other by Miss Stairmand. Ia the second half Welling-

ton maintained their advantage, but neither side added to the score, beiug too slow in the circle. TO-DAY'S FIXTURES. The following are the fixtures for today:— Senior. Nelson v. Hawke's Bay, on No. I ground, 3 p.m.; Wellington B v. Wairarapa A, No. 2 ground, 3 p.m.; Wellington.A and Wairarapa B, byes. , Junior. The Wellington A, having defeated Horowhenua, are the winners' of the championship. Friendly matches will bo arranged with tho teams now finished in this grade. The Wednesday Hockey 'Association's championship matches were continued yesterday afternoon under perfect weather conditions. The championship figures, as given below, show that the Pakeha A team has a splendid record, having scored 68 goals and only II bejng registered against them. The following, are yesterday's results:— FEDERAL (5) v. KARORI (6). The match between Karori and Federal, played on the Basin Reserve, resulted in big scoring being .done by both sides. Things were very even'in the first spell, but Karori showed totter combination, and scored four goals, Picot, Spiers, Smith, and Henderson being responsible. ■ Federal broke away on a few. good rushes, and some very, good individual play was shown by Johnston, who scored three goals'for them. - "tho ball-on, each occasion being carried, right the opposing backs by him. The backs on the Karori side, who are usually safe,' indulged in too much speculation, -and owing to tho ground being bumpy, they were passed without' difficulty by the Federal .forwards. In the second spell play was better. 011 both sides. Goals were scored first bygone side and then by the other, until,.the tally was five all, but just before time Karori ■ scored their sixth goal, thus winning, by 6 -to' 5. In the second spell, Jahn ■ and Johnston scored for Federal, and Smith and Cole for Karori, Mr. Goodman was in l charge of the game. . / PAKEHA A (9) v. PAKEHA B (1).. ' • Pakeha A met Pakeha B on the Basin Reserve before a fair number of spectators. It was a very hard game; and at times a little' rough, the refereo having occasion to caution several players. One of the Pakeha B players was*ordered off tho field for remarks made to the referee. In the first half, each-side registered a goal, Hunter for the B's and Mackay for the A's. In, the concluding spell, the B team went', to pieces, the A's scoring 8 to nil. . For : the 'winners, Mackay scored 4, Smith 2, Thomson 2, and Nutter 1. The A team won by 9 to 1. Mr. J. C.
