He spoko of alcohol as the greatest curse that afflicted civilised nations, and the parent of misery, poverty, degradation, and crime, to prove this quoting many facts arid figures, for a small premium involving a little selfdenial and the penalty of being considered a faddist, total abstinenco would ensuro against death from delirium tremens, alcoholic Bright's disease, peripheral neuritis, cjrrhosis liver, and alcoholic fatty degeneration of the heart. Whero men had contracted drinking habits operations wcro'much moro dangorous and more often fatal, and in fever cases 10 per cent, moro patients died. X' ifty per cent, of crime was induced by drink, and thirty per cent, of accidents were caused by drink. He urged tho men as a personal, individual matter to become total abstainers for tho sako of their families and themselves, and thus get the guarantee against tlioso dangors and diseases which total abstinence afforded. Dr. Chappie was heartily applauded for his address, and as a result eleven men took the pledge. A hearty voto of thanks was passed to Dr. and Mrs. Chapplo and the performers for the condert given, which was duly acknowledged by tho hostess, Mrs. Chappie, after which refreshments wore dispensed.
