A SUCCESSFUL FUNCTION. (BY TELEGttJ.m. —SI'ECIAL CORRESPONDENT.) • IV!asterton, September 9. The . county ball given at Masterton to- 1 night , was a very. brilliant function, main- 1 tairiing tho high standard set'in previous { years, and visitors, wero present from far 1 and:near. From Makuri, Pahiatua, Martin- 1 borough,; the Coast, and Wellington they .came, and the Lowor Valley was particularly i well represented. As in preceding years t both, tho Drill Hall and tho Town Hall wore requisitioned for tho occasion, the closedin passage that connected them .making them practically one large building. Both halls were hung all round 'with flags, curtains, mirrors, and pictures, the pillars hidden by clumps ;of bamboo, and quantities of flowers used wherever ■ flowers could be put, great ( •bowls being filled with white and yellow narcissi; arid brilliant anemones. Tho guests danced in the Drill Hall, whero the stage was comfortably furnished as a drawing-room for ' the onlodkers, and decorated with palms and < ferns. ' ' < The Town Hall was carpeted and furnished J most luxuriously with couches and easy chairs disposed about in many-secluded corners, and everywhere were small.tables laden with flowers. . An elaborate supper was served on the stage, where there were several long tables, and others. set for parties of eight, f Tho table decorations were varied, and this added to the brilliancy of the scene. , Some were, decked in purple and white with j anemones, and violets, otliors in _ white and < red,' and Mothers again with spring bulbs, i Theso last : wero liguted with candles covered I with idainty green or yellow shades, and the ( whole 'effect 'was charming. .
