Dr. Pomare, health officer to the Maoriß, leaves to-day on a visit to Wanganui. The Hon. J. D. Ormond, M.L.C., returned from a trip to Australia by the Mahcno yesterday. Mr. Philip 'Wharton, of Rewa (Feilding), leaves for London at the end of the month. He will go via South Africa in the White Star liner Runic. Mr. Alex. Brodio (of the firm of Brodio and M'Millan), accompanied by Mrs. Brodie, will leave oil a trip to England next month. They havo booked passages by the Opbir, leaving Sydney on October 28. Mr. R. Fletcher, who was recently approached by deputations with a view to his becoming a candidate for Wellington North or Wellington Central, has definitely decided not to stand for any seat at the forthcoming elections. A Grcymouth Press Association messago states that Mr. William Clark, of Scotland, has been appointed mine manager of the Blackball mine in place of Mr. Walter Leitch, who has been appointed general manager for tha company. The following appointments by the Wellington Education Board have been approved by tile school committees concerned Head teacher, Tokomaru, Mr. J. S. Webb, of Pahiatua j assistant-, Muritai, Miss J. Haslam; solo teacher, Whiteman's .Valley, Miss K. Pattle. On the night of August 31 Dr. Maloney, M.H.R., of Melbourne, was the victim of a painful accident, which it was at first feared might, havo serious consequences. He was striking a match, when the head flew into his eye, temporirily blinding him. The injury received the attention of Dr. Barrett, who was able to assure Dr. Maloney that it would have no permanent ill-effects. Mr. H. Linney, ,on severing his connection with the firm of Mackay,. Logan, Caldwell and Co. after fifteen years' service as accountant, was on Tuesday night presented by the manager (Mr. Thomson), on behalf of tho firm, with a handsome cheque, and from the staff with a gold watch suitably inscribed, the latter presentation being made by Mr.' Clouston, the oldest employee; The Dominion staff .assembled in the boardroom yesterday afternoon to honour Mr. M. W. Johnson, who has resigned the position of publisher to assume a similar post on the staff of the "Otago Daily Times." Tho presentation, which was made by the manager, Mr. W. H. Muhro, consisted of a handsome marble clock and a silver jewelcase for Sirs. Johnson, both suitably inscribed. Mr. Munro testified to tho good work done by Mr. Johnson during the past year, and said that he could only regard the appointment as an honour to Mr. Johnson, as he was going back home and to a paper on which he had occupied a less exalted position in tho past. He wished him <11 good fortune for the future. Mr. H. L. Cole, rounds inspector, read an address from The Dominion runners, expressing regret at Mr. Johnson's departure and thanking him for his kindness and consideration, and in conclusion presented Mr. Johnson with a serviceable travelling rug. The editor, Mr. C. Earle, added a few words of testimony/to, Mr. Johnson's unfailing oourtesy, as well as to his ability and energy. Tho gathering concluded with oheers and hearty handshakes. Mr. Johnson leaves for Dunedin this evening.
