THE TURF.

[By Glencoe.] HOROWHENUA HACK RACING CLUB'S MEETING. ALL RED WINS THE CUP. The annual meeting of the Horowhenua Hack Racing Club was commenced at Levin yesterday. The day was nice and fine, and the attendance was quite satisfactory, though the unsettled state of the. weather in tho early morning probably deterred a number from journeying to the" meeting. The racecourse grounds wore looking at their best,' and although a good amount -of rain had fallen tho previous evening it had not materially affected the racing track, as fair times were registered in most of the events, tlio Horowhenua Cup was won by All Rod, , the places being filled by Silken Rein and Landwern. Eleven bookmakers were licensed - for the day at a fee of £15. The totalisator investments totalled £3998, as against £5079 for the corresponding day last year, and this (taking the bookmakers' fees into consideration) is a satisfactory result. The following aro the details of tho racing:— FLYING HACK HANDICAP, of 60 sovs. Six furlongs. Mr. A. White's b. g. Waoriki, by Waiuku —Primula, -lyrs. 7st. ... (E. Lowe) 1 Mi'. W. ELECTRIC HACK HANDICAP, of 60 sovs, i Four furlongs. i Mr. W. Pewene's br. g. Naumai, by Con- , i queror, <lyrs., lOst. 91b. (T. Pritchard) 1 i Mr. S. W. Tatham's Lothair, 9st. 31b. (Jenkins), Naumai was first out of the barrier, and never left the issue in doubt, winning by three lengths from Lothair, .with Tuinut a good third. Time,' 50 3-ssec. NOTES AND COMMENTS. Whetumarama was the only-.withdrawal from the Flying Hack, for which'-Waoriki was a better favourite than King Post. Waoriki was ■ practically in front the whole way, and won comfortably at the finish. He is a tremendous big bay, somewhat re- ' semiring his half-brother, Barca, and though 'lie won in good style ho looks as if ho will improve considerably as the season grows. Lethean ran an honest race,' but never had a chance with the winner/ King Post began very badly, and when half the distance had been covcred he must have been twenty lengths. behind the leaders. 'He put in a wonderful run in tlie last furlong, and finished "close up' fourth. Llanwern shaped poorly, ; and . was too far out of "it in 'the early stages to have any chance. With the exception -.of Ney the others were, a yery poor 'lot., ' Ten horses -,went to the post for. the Park Stakes; llangipapa was'made a pronounced favourite,', the nest best' backed being Sir Frisco and Vasa. The last-named refused to go up .to the barrier for a long .time,, but by tho exercise "of a little patience Mr. O'Connor got tho field away in a good -line. Waihuku and Rangipapa at oucp singled themselves out, iind wero always in -front, , the latter drawing away-at the business,-end. Sir Frisco scarcely ran up to expectations. He was always..in the ruck, and at "the finish could only run "a moderate fourth. - The New Zealand Cup horses Moloch arid Rifiemaid wore given a run; in this 1-aco, but they were not prominent. Riflemaid. was going:.on at the_ right end,' but she was a long' Way' out of- it. Scotch Reel received a kick' at the post which did not .do her any good, as she finished absolutely last. Waihuku is-evi-dently on tho improve/,and ought 'to -win bfcforp iong. His owner" had hard luck yesterday, . for in addition to Waihuku running Second, Ney and Durability'filled: third positions. . . ;-J .. ;. Tho large field of fifteen.;contested; the Maiden Hack. Tho all incline when the tapes .were released, but a couple of them dwelt on the .mark' laiid spoiled the start. Sir Antrim was a. splid favourite, but failed ,to gain a place. "Ho was looking very, fit, but got away badly.',at the .start, and though ho ploughed his' 1 the field in resoluto fashion he'could get no nearer than fourth. Still lie 'is' a perfect little racehorse, and should not be long in placing a .win .to .the. credit of his owner.. Subdue, a chestnut filly by Conqueror, led for the first half-mile, but- failed to withstand a challenge from Hereward. This was Ilereward's third, race, his other efforts being at tho Wellington spring meeting last season. He ■■ shaped • pleasingly) but his victory was in some measure duetto the ■ horsemanship' clisplaypd by Jenkins. ",) The Conqueror gelding Vmco smartly, but was done with before a furlong had'Aeen ■covered. Bravery, one,, of the members of. Pritchard's team,' showe"d plenty of -pace; for' about three furlongs, but died away in the Straight. , (' : •„ The Horowhenua Cup was a fine ' race. Comedian arid" All Red were' : almost' equal favourites, and Silken Rciii and Maharanui were both liberally, supported. Comedian made all tho running to tho" home bend, where he was cut 6ttt_ of • liis position, and dropped back into third "place. -He-:.made a good effort to get up again 'in the straight, but was just beaten out of i place. Passing the-~stand the - first " timet All Rod and Laudwcrn were the last of the field. Both improved their'positions;-and-were handy at . the liomo turny"-wh'oro' "All Red got-a opening on the inside of the field, and',-after ' a solid tussle with Silken Rein,' Hie! won by half a length'.- Landwern' had to go right round the-field, and he '-.came,.-very fast from the distan'co .he had to be content with third.Silken, Rein had. 3 good passage the whole way,, but'was not; class .enough, for All .Red. "Or "tho others Maharanui - and 'MuSseUshaped the best., ~ , Notwithstanding the good form shown by Sandstream at Trentham and MartonJ'both Windage and Sharkeyne. were bettier favourites in the Welter Hack than .Wamuku's brother. ' The public judgment waS'at fault, however, for neither of the favourites gained ' a place, Sandstream winning very easily'from Yosami. There was a good deal.. of' merit in the victory, for Sandstream was, last'as they swept down the back, and lie appeared to be going well within himself Ayhen lie ran past the field in the straight; / Sharkeyne made no chow after the-first three furlongs, and finished nearly . last.. Waitoto/; fullbrother. to Waipaku, made his first appearance in this race, and proved himself pos- ' : isessed: of--pace. by. :runmng. to 'the'-lead at half: the 'distance. Ho : is-a, nice big- bay, and will be useful when a little more seasoned, • '? Peregrine and Lyrist were' the favourite selections for the ' Hack Hurdles, but tl}ey were -the""last"to fiiiish. . Hatley took a prominent position from-the start. tind_scbred a long overdue win.' He jumped much better 'than . he has done and showed no'disposition to run"off. ;'Netherby was in the lead at tho last fence, -but' he rapped it • rather hard-and easily ■"succumbed to the challenge of Hatley.' ' Jolly Roger put in • a fast finish, but ho; was , too far away to head Netherby. -' ■:' ' The scratching pen was freely. 'Used in tho Elcctric Handicap, only five of the fifteen acccptors contesting the event. Naumai was made the hottest favourite of the day,-and fully justified the confidence reposed in him by carrying his lOst. 91b.. to victory and covering the half-mile in excellent time. Tumut was very excitable at the post, and Naumai and Lothair were" a dozen-lengths ahead before the Merriwee gelding got-under way. He is certainly very speedy, and when ho gets used to travelling,_ will win plenty of races. Vladimir's full-sister,- Faux ;Pas, was one of the unplaced ; candidates. She is a shapely'little chestnut - filly, but.- does not look to bo equal to winning justyet-. . Viborg (Finland—Certificate) succumbed to the effects of a cold at Levin on Monday night. The -bay', gelding Was a promising three-year-old owned by Mr. Highden, ana was generally reckoned to be . one of the nicest horses that Ifinland has yet sired.
