NEW PROFESSOR OF. MATHEMATICS. (ill TELEGRAni—PEESS ASSCCiATIdV;, Christcliurch, September 9. [ A special meeting of tho Canterbury Collego Board of Governors was hold to-day for the purpose of appointing a professor of mathematics to fill tho vacancy caused by tho resignation of Professor Cook. _ Mr. Adams, chairman of tho Collcgo Committee, reported that the committee had decided to, recommend tho appointment of Mr. J. P. Gabbatt. Tho board approved of tho recommendation, and it was decided to cable to the High Commissioner advising him of tho appointmont of Mr. Gabbatt. (Mr. John Percy Gabbatt, M.A. (Cantab.), was born in 1880, and is unmarried. Ho. was a. scholar of tho University Collego, LiverP9OI, from 1897 to 1900, and in tho lattor year 110 took his B.Sc. degree at Victoria University with first-class honours in mathematics, and was also awarded a Derby Scholarship. He then went to Cambridgo, and was an exhibitioner at Peterhouso from 1900 to 1901,'nnd a scholar from 1901 to 1904. Ho took his B.A. degreo at Cambridge in 1903, being bracketed eighth wrangler. In 1903 110 took his M.Sc. degreo at Victoria University, and in 1904 secured a.first-class in Part ll'of the mathematical tripos. 111 1904 ho took his M.Se. degree at Liverpool,''and in 1907 his-M-.A. degree at'. Cambridge. Since leaving Cambridge lio undertook a courso of . study, in. tho theory of teaching, and 111 1907 lie obtained'tho teachers' diploma of tho London University;' Mr. Gabbatt is at present, mathematical lecturor at University Collego, Nottingham,' whoro ho was -responsible; for most of tho' teaching of tho_ "intermediate", standard in' pure and applied' matliomatics, his classes, being of all sizes up to about 35. Altogether lie lias had four years' oxperienco in teaching classes in puro and applied mathematics as required in, the matriculation, intermediate, and final' examinations of, tho London University. . •' Thirty-seven applications 1 - had been received by the board for tho position.
