Hardy, M.P., said ho wished they could do inoro for tho teachers. Their education system was cheap and nasty. By this ho meant no rellection on tho Ministers, but "cheap and nasty" from tho parents' point of view, becauso tho parents did not have to pay for it. When pooplo dccidcd to send their bftys to a high school they looked around for what they thought was tho best school, and wero quite satisfied just becauso they had to pay for their boys' education. With regard to the public schools, however, tho parents wero always grumbling at tho teacher, instead of helping- him by sending their children regularly to school, and doing their best in other ways. Small Bird Nuisancc. At tho monthly mooting of tho Ashburton County Council Sir. Grainger mado an offer to exterminate all small birds ill the district in two years with the uso of traps, if the council would enter into an agreement to pay him at tho rato of Is. per dozen. Tho Chairman said if the traps would do what the inventor claimed for them tho council might offer him some inducement to uso them in the Ashburton district, but they could not raiso tho price to bo paid from 9d. to Is. per dozen without first conferring with tho Selwyn County Council, as tho two bodies had agreed on a uniform price of 9d. per dozen. It was decided to arrange another conforonco. DUNEDIN. September 7. A Port Chalmers resident while out for a walk yesterday over his farm near Kaikai beach found a greenstone, adzo nine inches long flawlessly preserved. Other Maori implements have previously been found in the same locality. Tho University Council was to-day asked to find out what has become of the stuffed moa, one of tho finest in the colony, that was loaned by tho Otago Museum to the Christclnirch Exhibition, and has not sinco boon heard of. Dry land is beginning to; appear on the hills around tho Mamototo Plain. The thaw has been gradual and it is not anticipated, unless a warm nor-u'estor should spring up in tho next few days, that a flood in tho Taieri ltiver will ensue. The disappearance of the snow discloses a fine sward of young grass. NAPIER. September, 7. An interesting point .was raised at the quarterly meeting of the Napier Licensing Committee to-day. An application was made by John' Pierco Smith to transfer a partnership in tho Union Hotel, .Port Ahuriri, to Edward James Warren. Mr. Lusk appeared for the applicant. The. chairman (Mr. H. B. Brabant, S.M.) asked if there.was a precedent for a joint license. Ho had never heard of a license issued to a joint partnership. The Act specially provided- for this point in wholesale licenses, but ho had always thought that it. was necessary that a hotel license should ho issued to one man, who was responsible for the conduct of tho house. Mr. Lusk said in the present application it was proposed to do moro than this. It was proposed to niako two men responsible for tho conduct of the house —a double precaution.. The chairman said that the committee were of the belief that a similar application had . been granted, in Napier some eight or nine years ago although lie'had not heard of it. ■ Mri Liis'k said'ho understood thero was a similar-case in Wellington. The chairman said it was a' question how far theycould go in tho matter. Could a corporation hold-a license? Mr. Lusk said he did not think the committeo could go as- far as'that, but ho did not think thero was anything to prevent a partnership. It was decided to adjourn tho application for one week in order that tho records might bo considered.' 1
