$ TRIBUTE TO VON TEMPSKY. (BY TEI.EGKini—I'IIESS ASSOCIATION.) Hav/era, September 7. , Thcro was a great gathering at To Ngutu-O-te-Manu yesterday to commemorato tho disastrous engagement of forty years ago today, when von Tempsky's forces wero so disastrously defeated and tho gallant major fell. Of tho forco which took part in tho engagement there were seven survivors present yesterday, namely, Messrs. James Livingston, John Flynn (Hawera), J. H. Walker (Waitara), J. Hickman (Uronui), J. Old and J. 0. D. Quigloy (Inglewood), and William J. Griffiths and T. P. Lister (New Plymouth). These were introduced to tho Hon. Pi. M'Nab, who examined tho medals worn by tho veterans. Addressing the assemblage. Mr. M'Nab said that many such gatherings would simplify tho defence problem, for sentiment would bo built up round which a rallying point would be formed. We were, said tho Minister, living in a fool's paradise. It must not bo thought because thero now wero no enemies within our borders that tho defence problem was solved. With tho advance of civilisation the Powers wero now able to strike from great distances. Mr. Major, M.P., and others also spoke. Many tributes were paid to Major von Tempsky's memory. Volunteer corps and bands from all parts of the district took part in the ceremony. Mr. M'Nab left for Wellington this morning. '
