COMPENSATION COURT.
LAND FOR TRAMWAY -OFFICES. CLAIM AGAINST THE CITY CORPORATION. By consent of tho parties, Mr. Justice Cooper sat as a Compensation Court, constituted under Section 56 of tho Act, to hear the case of C. W. Brodie v. tho City Corporation. Mr. T. Young appeared on behalf of the claimant, and Mr. O'Shea for tho respondents. This was a claim for compensation in respect of a leasehold interest in the property, taken for tramway offices on Thomdon Quay. Claimant was the lessoo under a lease for 20 years, and the corporation have leased the proporty for tho whole of tho term excepting tho last 15 months. The corporation is paying £234 por annum a.s rent for the proporty. It was agreed between the owner of tho fee simple, claimant, and the respondents that the rental should bo assessed as ground rent at £55, and therefore the amount the claimant Would receive from the loaso would be £179 per annum. The case, was settled by respondents agreeing to an award giving to claimant £179 por annum from the date of tho taking of tho proporty until tho date of tho expiration of their lease, whioh will bo March 31, 1924. For tho balance of tho term, viz., 15 months, until Juno. 30, 1925, the respondents will pay tho same rental increased by 20 per cent. —£214 16s. Tho corporation also agreed to pay a moderate sum for costs. In the opinion of his Honour the eottlejnent was a very fair ono.'
