THE COMING ELECTIONS.

_$ WELLINGTON SUBURBS. Mr. J. E. Fitzgerald addressed a crowded audience at Palm Grove, Berliampore, last evening. Mr. W. A. Thomson _ occupied the chair. The speaker dealt with taxation, Socialism, advances to workers, the labour question, and superannuation and classification. Mr. Fitzgerald .also stated his determination to go to the poll. On being questioned, the candidate sjiowed the difference between "referendum" and. "plebiscite." On being asked would lie, if returned, be in favour of increasing the poll -tax on Chinese entering the Dominion from £100 to £500, the candidate answered, decisively, "Yes." On the motion of Mr. Twomey, seconded by Mr. Whithair, the speaker, was accorded a hearty vote of thanks and confidence as a fit and proper person to represent tho electors in Parliament. The speaker received a very attentive hearing 1 throughout. A committee of 35 was formed.. Mr. J. P. Luke, a candidate for the new Suburbs seat, addressed a meeting at the State School, Wadestown, last evening. Mr. E. Wylie occupied the chair. Tho candidate dealt "with various matters now before Parliament, and in dwelling on the marked prosperity of tho country stated that the trade of the Dominion had doubled itself in the last ten years. Mr. Luke stated that the Dominion's best line of defence was the navy, and lie was of opinion that the Government should contribute substantially towards the upkeop of tho better class or British ships on our coast, which should ha supplemented by encouraging the cadet and volunteer system. In respect to education, ho expressed the view that it was the duty of tho State to give every promising pupil the opportunity to graduate in the Universities of tho Dominion. Mr. Luke said that if elected he would do all he could to resist any attempt to transfer city hotel licenses to suburban portions of the district. He also referred to the need for better telephone facilities in the suburbs. As a member of the City Council, the candidate was questioned on tho subject of tramway extension to Wadestewh. He assured his audience that the City Council was doing all in its power to forward the interests of the. district, and tho tramway proposal would be brought forward at an early date. A vote of thanks and confidence was moved by Mr. E. Knight, seconded by Mr. A. Kilmister an;! carried.

Mr. William M'Lean, candidate for Wellington East, will hold a meeting at th'n Schoolroom; Rosoneath, on Tuesday, at. 8' o'clock', with a view to forming a committee in that part of tho electorate. | We are informed that Mr. M. O'Kano, President of the Letterpress Printers' Union,' has abandoned tho intention of contesting the seat for Wellington North, as announced in tho press last Novomber.

To-morow evening at Ihe Unitarian 'Free Church, Masonic Hal], Bonlcott Street, Dr. Tudor Jones will commence a serins of four addresses on "Four Great Keligious Problems and their Present-day Answers." The sories will continue for the four Sunday evenings of September, and will deal with (1) The Problem of God; (2) The Problem of Jesus" Christ; (3) Tho Problem of Personality; (4) Tho Problem of Immortality. The Tramways Band will give a performance at Island Bay to-morrow, at 3 p.m. A public meeting of ratepayers will bo hold in tho Eechabito Hall, Johnsonvillo, at 7.30 p.m., on Monday next. \ Services will be held to-morrw at St". Paul's Pro-Cathedral, Mulgrave Street, as follow:— Holy; Communion 8 a.m., Matins and Holy Communion 11 a.m., evensong 7 p.m. Offertories will be in aid of the general church fund of tho diocese. A mass meeting of tho "Dominion Scout*" will be held at Annit's rooms, L*mbton Qu*y, at 7.45 p.m. on Tuesday. ' Messrs.
