FAMOUS TREES DOOMED TO BE. . BURNED. New York, September 3. The forest fires' have reached tho mammoth groves of sequoia trees at Calaveras. Thero is little hope of saving them.. Ono of tlw largost has already been destroyed.
Tho famous gronp known as tho Mammoth Grftvo of Calaveras, in California, containing above ninety largo trees, stands in 38 deg. N. lat., about 4370 ft. above tho sea, between the San Antonio and Stanislaus rh ers. According to Vischer, it was discovered by a hunter in Sursuit of a bear in 1852, but had, apparently, eon visited before, as the date 1850 is cut on ono of tho trees. The bark of ono of the finest trunks was foolishly stripped off to the height of 116 ft., and. exhibited m New York and London,- it now stands in tho Crystal Palace, Sydenham. Tho tree, known as tho "mother of the forest," soon died; at the baso it measured 80ft. in girth, and the dead treo was 321 ft. high: a prostrate trunk in the neighbourhood is 18ft. in diameter, 300 ft. from tho base. Some trees in Mariposa grove rival these in size; one measures 101 ft. round the root, and a cut stump is 31ft. in diameter. The tree is scanty of foliage, and not beautiful, the timber is not of great value, and though it grows fast when young, tho old trees increase with extreme slowness. Somo aro of vast ago,' perhaps 3000 years or more. It was cabled the other dav that tho Yosemite Valley, with its giant redwoods, was being swept by fire. One of thelhugo sequoias in tho _ Mariposa Grove has a carriage drive, through its trunk.
