Spring. September 2-1 and 26. —Wanganui J.C. Spring. October 7 and B.—Hawke's Bay J.C. Spring, i REMINDER. Owners ant] trainers are reminded that acceptances for the first day's events at the annual meeting of • the Horowhenua Hack Racing Club closo at 8 o'clock to-night with the club's secretary, Mr. I l '. G. Roe, at his office, Weraioa, Levin. MARTON JOCKEY CLUB MEETING. CROFTON HANDICAP WON BY MAHARANUI. • FRISCO DISQUALIFIED DURING PLEASURE. (BY TELEGRAPH. —SPECIAL (JOUItESPONDENT.) Palmerston North,' September 3. Tho weather was again fino for the concluding day of the Mart-on Jockey Club's meeting, and tho attendance was considerably above the average. Largo fields went to the post in every event, and some good sport was witnessed, though several of tho events were unfortunately marred by poor starting. In the Crofton Handicap.several New Zedland Cup candidates made .their appearance, ilie race was the best of the meeting, and resulted in a very exciting finish, the first four horses finishing within half a length of one another after a great, tussle up tho straight. The winner, Maharanui, is the first of tho New Zealand Cup candidates to win a race since tho declaration of weights. Waitoa gave A. M'Connon a nasty fall in tho steeplechase, tho Wellington horseman sustaining a broken collarbone and a severe shaking. Something akin to a sensation was caused after the first race by the disqualification of Frisco, his' owner, and jockey during the pleasure of the stewards. The horso finished last in the Shorts Handicap on Wednesday, and on that occasion was not backed to any extent. To-day he started a hot favourite ■in the Telegraph Handicap, and, after conceding Kareroa half a dozen lengths through a faulty start, ho won comfortably. A protest lodged . by the owner of Kareroa against Frisco for inconsistent run-, ring resulted in the disqualification aforesaid. Tho affair caused a lot of bother to tho bookmakers, many of whom, not being aware of tho inquiry that was going on, paid out a considerable amount of money on Frisco, and afterwards had to pay out on Kareroa and Waihuin. A number of those who received dividends from tho bookmakers were asked to disgorge, but refused to entertain the request. In some cases the stewards were appealed to 1 by the ■ bookmakers, but they declined to interfere in tho matter. Those of \ the public who backed Frisco on tho machine lost their money without ever having a chance of winning, and on this account it was unfortunate that the judicial committee did not see fit to hold an inquiry into the horse's form'on tho first day.

Tho totalisator investments for the day amounted to £6775, making a total of £13,673 for tho mooting, as against £13,576 for last year's fixture, and in addition tho club received about £500 in bookmakers' fees, so that tho financial result of the meeting should be very satisfactory. Tho following are details of tho racing:— TELEGRAPH HANDICAP, of 80 sovs. Six furlongs. Mr. F. Preston's b. h. Frisco, by Earwig —Lake Placid, syrs., 9st. (A. Oliver) 1 Mr. L. G. Bremer's Kareroa, Sst. 31b. (Danahay) 2 Mr. J. George's Waihuku, 7st. 31b. (H. Price) 3 Also started: Rangipapa, ,Bst. 71b. (\Y. Young); Splendid Idea, Sst. 61b. (Jenkins); Toa Tuhi, Bsfc. 2ib. (Lambert); Silver Lead, 7st. 61b. (Hatch); Millennial, 7st. 61b. (Kirk). ' Kareroa got tho best of tho start by half a dozen lengths, while Rangipapa, "Silver Lead, Toa luhi, and Millennial were badly left, tho two last-named being hopelessly out of it. At half thodistanco Kareroa had nearly ten lengths advantage, his nearest attendants being Frisco and Waihukii; Just beforo entering tho straight, Frisco commenced to overhaul the leader, and about a hundred _ yards from borne Kareroa was passed, Frisco winning' comfortably by a length and a half, with Waihuku a length away third, Rangipapa fourth, Splendid Idea fifth, and Millennial last. Time, linin. lusec. *

A protest was entered against tho winner for inconsistent running, and aftor considering the matter, the stewards decided to disqualify the horse and his owner and jockoy during pleasure, and tho stakes were awarded to Kareroa and AVailmku, and the dividends paid out ou these horses. Sir. F. Preston has lodged an appeal against the decision of tho -stewards. HUNTERS HURDLES, of 50 sovs. For Hunters only. One mile and threequarters. Mr. G., W, Oakenfull's b. g. Taupo, by Chasseur, 6yrs., lOst. 31b. (J. Hercock) 1 Mr. D. Buick's Netberby, lOst. 41b. (Lyford) 2 Mr. W. J. Phillips's Ballance, lOst.' 21b. (M'Connon) 3 Also started: Kaurca, lOst. 101b. Netherby went to • the front at the top of the course, and led to the last hurdle, where Taupo, Ballance,- and Fircstick closed up. In tho run homo Taupo beat Netherby by a length, with Ballance a couplo of lengths away third, Firestick fourth, and Morelli last. Time, 2min. 31sec.

Gleam, who was a hot favourite in the first hurdles on 'Wednesday, was comparatively neglected to-day.' 'She took the lead before the second hurdle was'readied, arid stayed in .front for the remainder, of the journey. Speciosa gave a lot of trouble at the barrier, and:in a scrimmage Black Banner got a-kick on the near hind leg, just below the stifle, and had to return to tho paddock. ■ There was a field of fourteen to contest the Final Scurry.. After several false starts, Whetuinarama was quickest to begin, and soon established a strong lead. It never looked as if there was a chance of any of the other horses catching him; and though Roosevelt got within two .lengths of him at the fiiiish it is probable that Whetumarama was not doing his best. He carried his heaVy impost in a businesslike style,, and should |sooii race himself out of the hack division. Roosevelt's two seconds at the "liieetirig were- fairly good performances,., and he should win a scurry before long. Winning jockeys at the meeting were:— R. Hatch; two; J.
