THE COMING ELECTIONS.
HOW GOVERNMENT CANDIDATES ARE SELECTED. (BT_T£LEQEAPn.—SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT.)' ■ ' Dunedin, September 3. Mr. E. Ga.llichan, secretary of the Liberal party'B organisation, said to a reporter today; ."When 1 two or more candidates declare on; our side our Liberal friends invariably make an urgent request to our leader to say rhich of the candidates is preferable. ' lii euch circumstances he takes every possible means of ascertaining the views of the electorate, and selects the man whose chances show tho strongest prospects. In no case, however, is any gontleinan nominated and thrust upon the/ electors as some Liberals, whoi are ;not so chosen, would have us believe. 'It is not a case of the Prime Minister selecting 'a . candidate. Up to now ho has never nominated a candidate. He has .al-i ways left tho initiative to the people themselves: What he does is to advise. H> stands in" a position from which ho can se.3 further than most men, and having varied sources of information and wide experience, he is able to look over mere parochial differences and tell the constituency which of the candidates is the ono that ought to receive support." ' Mr.' W. Fleming, ono of the aspirants to tho Dunedin South seat, was asked at his meeting last night whether ho was an out-and-put Labour candidate. He replied" in the affirmative, and was then informed by tile questioner that if returned he would just have to do what ho was told. Mr. J ._ P. Luko addressed- a meeting of electors in the Parochial Hall, Karori, last evening, Mr. Burns presiding. There was a good. attendance. The speaker covered previous ground, including tho land question, Hospital and Charitable Aid Act, and. defence matters. Ho also gave some interesting particulars of irrigation systems in the United States and other places, arid a voto of thanks and confidence, proposed by Mr. W. Hildreth and seconded by Air. Raine, was passed. _An • advertisement regarding the formation of Mr. T. M. Wilftird's Petone committee appears in another column.
