Mr. John' S. Swan, architect, who has been on a visit to Australia, returned by tho Matai yesterday morning. Sir. H. J. Greenslade, M.P., left for Hamilton yesterday to attend the funeral of the late. Mr. 11. J. Paull. Mr. Vincent Ward, 0:10 of tho Prime Minister's sons, who is a trooper in the crack London volunteer corps, tho King's Colonials, won the, recruits' prize for shooting at Bisley. Upon severing his connection with Messrs. Lacry and Co., for whom ho has acted as town traveller, Mr. Richard Bremer was presented by the staff with mementos of esteem and a cheque by tho firm. A Dunedin Press Association telegram states that Mr. C. C. Graham, who has been a stipendiary magistrate in Dunedin, for the past twenty years, sat for the last time yesterday morning, and- was "farewelled" by tho legal profession. A presentation was made by tho staff of tho Magistrate's Court tnd tho members of the police force. Mr. H. N. Holmes, secretary of the Wellington Y.M.C.A., will leave 011 Saturday night to attend the opening ceremony of the new Y.M.C.A. building iu Christchurch on Monday next. The -Hon. G. Fowlds has agreed to lay the foundation stono and givo an address, and a second foundation stono will be laid by Mrs. J. Craoroft Wilson., Constable Wright, who has been stationed for two years at the Mount Cook Polico Station, has been transferred to Ohakune. Last evening Mr. Wright was, presented by his comrades at the station with a valuable caso of pipes and a tobacco pouch as a token of their regard, and friendly wishes wero expressed for his success in his new sphere of duties. Tho' Rov. J. Humphreys,. 8.A., uow of Pongaroa, has been appointed to the charge of the Anglican Church at Aramoho, and will bo succeeded at Pongaroa by tho Rev. G. B. Stephenson, M.Sc., now assistant curato at Charleston North. Tho llev. A. H. Heron, lato assistant curate of St. James's, Hutt, has loft tho diocese for work in the district of Cambridgo, Auckland diocese. Tho return of tho Rev. E. W. J, M'Connel, vicar of Khandallab, from his visit to the Old Country, is expected very soon.
The Iter. -Frank Walter Piggott, M.A., who arrived at Auckland from England on Sunday last, has boon appointed to tho charge of St. Thomas's, Auckland. • Tho appointment was made by Canon M'Murray, tho bishop's commissary. _ Mr. Piggott was formerly curato of St. Aidan's, Nowcastle-on-Tyno. Tho Rev. G. C. Cruickshank, 8.A., of Kcblo College, Oxford, has been accepted for service in tho Auckland diocese.' Ho is an old Auckland boy, who went Home five years ago to Oxford, and has now volunteered for sorvico in New Zealand. The Rev. Cecil W. Howard, formerly of the Molansian Mission, has also been accepted for service in Auckland.
Herr Benno Scherek, tho well-known musician, who has been settled in Christehurch for somo six months, has (telegraphs our Christclmrch correspondent) accepted the appointment of director of Sir. J. C. Williamson's musical enterprises, and leaves hero for Melbourne in about a fortnight. Tho salary is not announced, but it is believed to be somewhere in tho neighbourhood of four figures. Since ho came to Christclmrch, Herr Scherek, in addition to establishing a largo connection with private pupils, has created tho Christclmrch Orchestra, of which he is the honorary conductor. Tho orchestra has 55 members, and has already become most popular. Herr Scherek has also received the appointments of organist of tho Catholic Cathedral and conductor and musical director of the Christclmrch Amateur Operatic Society and tho Ashburton Orchestral Society. Ho has become, in fact, a musical power in tho city, and his loss will be greatly felt.
