MARTON J.G. MEETINC. MARTON HANDICAP WON BY SILKEN REIN. (l)Y TELEGRAPH. —SI'ECIAX CORItESPONDENT-J Palmercton North, September 2. Tho Mart-oil' Jockey Club's annual race meeting was commenced to-day under the most favourable conditions. Tho weather was beautifully fine, and the oxcursion trains from Taihape, Wanganui, and Palmerston North brought large crowds to the racecourso, the attendance being easily a record in tho history of tho club. The grounds wero in splendid order, and the, various improvements made' by tho club during the year add greatly to tho appearance or tho racecourso and to tho comfort of tho club s patrons. Tho track was in nice condition for racing, though a trifle holding down the back stretch. Throughout tho da£ the fields wero very large, and somo good racing took placo. One or two mishaps occurred .in tho jumping events, but nono of the horses or. riders wero injured. Tho principal event, the Marton Handicap, was won by tho \\ai-rarapa-owned Silken Rein, who scored comfortably, while the Hunt Cup was appropriated by Janella after a pretty race. Seventeen bookmakers were licensed by tho club, and tho results of tho races were somowhat in their favour. Tho totalisator investments for tho day amounted to £6898, as against £6541 for the first day last year, which, considering tho foes received from bookmakers, is a more than satisfactory result. The starter had some unruly horses to deal with during the day, and the _ dispatches, with tho exception of that in tno Marton Handicap, were not very brilliant. Raugipapa had his chances spoiled in tho Electric Handicap by being left several lengths, and Chattel was left standing the post. AVhetumarama broke through tno tapes several times in this_ latter event, tho rider being cautioned that if tho offence was repeated the field would be started without him. After tho Handicap Hurdles a complaint was. lodged regarding the ownorship of Lyrist, but the stewards decided not to alter the judge's placing. The following arotho details of tho racing:— SHORTS HANDICAP, of 80 sovs. Five furlongs. Mr. S. W. Tatham's b. g. L'othair, by Tho ' Officor—Tiratu, aged, 7st.; 51b. , (R. Hatch) 1 Mr. D. The Hencoop brought Mongolia down, iand as they raced past the railway Janella and Whipcord had drawn clear of the field. This pair led round the top from Ballance, while Firestick made a forward move. The latter had run into third position at the Hencoop, -but at this obstacle he turned a somersault. Janella ran right away from Whipcord at the bottom of tho course, and, making no mistake over tho last jump, won easily by half a dozen lengths from Ballance, who beat Whipcord in tho run homo by half a length. After a couple of falsi starts, Whotumarama hopped out in front, while Chattol was left at tho post at tho end of two furlongs. Whotumarama was just in front of Royal Maid, after whom came Sir Artegal and tho rest closely bunched. Whetumarama was never headed, winning comfortably by a length from Sir Antrim, who finished very fast. Royal Maid was a good third, Pytcliley fourth, Sir Artegal fifth, and Recollection last. Time, Imm. 4 3-sscc. MARTON HANDICAP, of 150 sovs.-! second horse to receive 20 sovs., and the third 10 sovs. from tho stako. Ono mile. Mr. Skeot's b. m. Silken Rein, by Saracon —Dromedary. (Clareburt) 3 Also started: Wailetho, 9st. (Hatch); Irish Rifle, Bst. 111b. (Jenkins); Seaman, Bst. 101b. (G. Price); A pa, Bst. 41b. .(Oliver); Glenullin, Bst. 41b. (Barlow); Loirct, 7st. 111b. From an even start Irish Rifle went to the front, closely followed by Seaman, Silken Rein, and Loirct, while Roseal immediately tailed off last. The four leaders kept their positions for the first half-mile, and at the end of that distance Comedian was fiftK A little further on fell away, ana at the entranco to the straight Irish Rifle and Soaman were tiring. Here Silken Rein took command, followed by Comedian, while Maharanui moved forward from the ruck. Silken Rein finished full of running, and won by over, a length from Comedian, with Maharanui a length away third, Seaman fourth, Irish Rifle and Gaelic next, and Roseal and Royal Blue last. Time, lmin. 47sec. HANDICAP HURDLES, of 60 sovs. Ono mile and a half.Messrs. Bowen and Corrigan's br. g. Lyrist, by The Officer —Lyre, aged, lOst (C. Cochrano) 1 Mr. H. E. ' At the start Papatawa and Lyrist wero prominent, but Speciosa quickly assumed command, and led past the stand from Morelli, ~ Papatawa, Paparaetu, with Tui last. Going down the back Lyrist ran into second position behind Speciosa. This pair and Papatawa approached the laßt hurdle close together, but !once over the jump Lyrist forged ahead, and despite a challenge from Papatawa won by a couple.of lengths. Speciosa was a poor third. Time, 2min. 55sec. TUTAENUI "WELTER, of 60 sovs. Seven furlongs. Mr. E. J. Watt's br. g. Cauldron, by Merriwee —Bubbles, 5 years, Bst., 51b. (C. Jenkins) 1 Mr. R. Hianga's Tuatahi, • Bst. 61b. (R. Hatch) 2 Mr. W. Davios's Yosami, Bst. 131b. (G. Price) 3 Also started: Recreation, 9st. ■ 101b. : (Young); Dr. Shimosej 9st. 31b. (Mr. Matthews); Sandstream, 9st. (Griffiths); Research, Bst. 131b. (\V. Price); Sylvan Park, Bst. 61b. (R. ■ Barlow); Wihdage, Bst. 41b. (Wilson); Rawinia, Bst. lib. (Oliver); Ruaputore, Bst. (Whitehouse). ' After going a furloiig Cauldron had a length's load, his nearest attendants being Tuatahi and Research. Cauldron led all the way, and won under the whip by a clear length from Tuatahi, who was a head in front of Yosami, with Research a head away fourth. Time, lmin. 34sec. ■ , NOTES AND COMMENTS. [Bt Glencoe.] ! The withdrawal of St. Claimer, Lady Menschikoff, and Whetumarama from the Shorts Handicap left the good field of eleven to contest tho event. Rangipapa was installed a solid favourite, but i the horse was absolutely tho last to leave the mark. He mado up a lot of ground in the last three furlongs, but had to come round on the outside at tho home bend, and though ho finished •strongly he was beaten a length by Lothair. The latter commenced very well, and with Chaso Mab carried the field along at a good pace to tho straight. Just at the home bend Lothair, Kareroa, Chase Mab, and Rangipapa, all appeared to be going well, but Lothair drew out, and stalling off the challenge of Rangipapa, won with a little' in hand. ' Frisco, who looks pretty well, was the last to finish, while Oil King and' Splendid Idea never showed up.

Sixteen candidates lined up for the Trial Hurdles, Gleam being the favourite, while Porigrine, Aucycle, Hatley, and De Nil also had plenty of supporters. Peregrine went to the front early, and always appeared to have the ■ race in hand. Ancyle made a very creditable first appearance over, the jumps, and finished well over tho final portion of the journey.' De Nil fell when going well six furlongs from homo. Llanwern and Parable" were the public fancies in the Maiden Plate, but neither managed to gain a place. For the first furiong Llanwern was galloping with, the leaders, but he met with considerable interference, and dropped back" to the rear. fie put in a run in the straight, but could get no nearer than sixth.. Lady Lucy was one 'of the first to leave the barrier, and her jockey made every post, a winning 0110, and kept the filly in front till the post was reached. The Trentham-trained Roosevelt showed improved form on his previous essays, and finished a good second. Muritai, who had the services of Jenkins, was quieter than usual at tho barrier, but refused to leave the mark till the rest of tho field had gone about a hundred yards. The roan filly Parable, though well supported, never looked like winning. She is a three-year-old by Morriwee—Palaver, and has the reputation of being speedy. The . Hunt Cup Steeplechase proved the best of good things for Janella, who was a pronounced favourite. The Handsomo Jack mare jumped splendidly throughout, but she was nearly down once on account of Whipcord boring across her at thedouble in front of tho st,»nd. The Second and third horses both gave good exhibitions of fencing, but could not keep paco with the winner. One of tho candidates in the Electric Handicap was Sir Antrim, tho full-brother to Lord Soult. He was probably the bost-look-irig horse competing ■ at the meeting, and showed excellent form, for after getting badly away he put in a great run in the straight, arid had everything but 'Whetumarama well beaten. He is sure to win races before long. Whetumarama, the favourite, took the lead from the barrier rise, and was never at top speed. This horse is easily the best of Advance's progeny that has yet been seen. He has now won three, races out of half-a-dozen starts. Royal Maid was -hitting out in fine stylo in her preliminary to-day, and ran well in the race' itself, she appeared to be tiring as the post was reached. Sir Artegal, who is looking _in nice trim, did not run any too well, nor did Overture, who was ono of tho well-backed division,. . All the acceptors but Millennial went to the post for the Marton Handicap. Irish Rifle, with Jenkins as pilot,, was the favourite selection and TVailethe, Seaman, and Glenullin' we're next in demand. Something' in tho nature of a surprise occurred by the victory of Silken Rein, who was in the third position till the homo .bend, where she came through naid won comfortably.. Irish Rifle and Seaman led for six furlongs,- but both died away in the straight. Comedian was rather far out of it-in tlie early stages,-otherwise ho might possibly havo caused the winner-some uneasiness. . Glenullin looked too big to see out the race, but ho is credited -with, good track work during the week. Wailetho got away with the field, but she was' always in tho ruck. Gaelic was on the outside of the field as they. started, and but for this he must havo run into a place, for he was finishing at a terrific rate. In the Handicap Hurdles, Otnraoa ■ was made the hottest favourite of the day, but ho never for a second flattered his supporters, and never got within touch of the leading division. It was practically a threo-horso raco tho whole way, Lyrist, Papatawa, and Speciosa being the only candidates that possessed chances. L.vrist is very well, and seems to have regained a glimnso of his form of two seasons ago. The hurdles at Marton are on the small side, ■ and for thts reason it would not perhaps bo wise to write Lyrist down as a safe,- jumper, but if ho can got _ over stiffor timber safely ho is euro to win a lot of races. Tho Tutaenui Welter, tho last race of tho day, was not wanting for competitors, thore being no fower than cloven to face the starter. Dr. Shimoso was tho actual favourite, but the Now Zealand Cup candidate, was never in tho hunt. Cauldron, who was tho next .best supported, was in the lead after going

a few strides, and was not afterwards headed. Jenkins had to shako the whip at him_in tho straight, but the big son of Merriweo responded most gonerously, and passed the post a little more than a length in front of .Tuatahi. Research and Tuatahi were next to Cauldron- tho wliolo. way, but Yosami just got up on the post, and beat Research for third place. SECOND DAY'S ACCEPTANCES. (IIY TELEGUAI'U—I'KESS ASSOCIATION.)
