— <— A CANVASSER FINED. (BT TELEOBArn—rRESS ASSOCIATION.) Auckland, September 2. . At the Police Court this afternoon John William Mackay, a resident of Grey Lynn, was charged .with committing a-breach-of the Electoral Act in . that "ho signed his , namo as witness to. the signature of William Albert Sims upon a claim for enrolment for the electoral district of Grey Lynn with-, out having seen such signature written, or' without having heard the person signing de-' claro the said signature to bo. his own and signed of his own proper name." Tho defendant, who explained that ho was a ship's steward, and was engaged by a political body to canvass the electorate,' stated that he acted in good faith, and committed tho breach unwittingly. His Worship said it - . was very necessary that tho Act should bo l complied with, otherwise thq > rolls .would bo stuffed." A substantial 'deterrent must be imposed, and one which, ho hoped, would ■ be a lesson to other people. A fine of £5 and 30s. costs -was then inflicted.
