—a THE AUCKLAND HOTELS. A FAVOURABLE REPORT. Auckland, September 1. At a meeting of tho City Licensing Committeo to-day the clerk (Mr. H. H. G! Ralfo) produced a letter from a temperance society on tho question of tho conduct of the Auckland hotels during the past threo months or so. Tho letter, which was forwarded by the Auckland Young Men's . Real lomperance Club, states that with reference to tho report of tho Young Men's NoLicenso Club, which was considered at the annual meeting,of tho committee in June, thoy had given careful attention to'the conduct of the various Auckland hotels. Their members had visited tho hotels at irreeular intervals, and the reports were in almost every caso considered to bo very satisfactory, and were totally at variance with those fur. mshed by the Young Men's No-License Club. There had been observed every disposition on the part of the hotelkeepers to conduct their business on good lines, having every regard for tho obligations duo by thom to tho public.' Tho licensing laws were strictly observed, especially as regards the hours of closing and tho refusal of liquor to persons showing any signs of intoxication. Even during tho pressure of Fleet Week tho hotels were conducted in a manner which called forth tho highest praiso from prominent visitors, and from tho public. The report, taken right 'through, fully substantiated' those of the police at the annual meeting. In conclusion they would point out that the' Auckland hotels were satisfactorily conducted,, and a credit to tho.city. A member pointed out that a statement had been mado in the South describing the Fleet Week preceedings as "A Bacchanalian Orgy." , Mr. Dyer: You don't want to take any notice of theso irresponsible statements. As far as tho police know the hotelkeepers did' their best to conduct their business in a proper manner. ;.

Dr. I'urdy, District Health "Officer, in a lecture last night urged the teaching of hygiene in schools as a compulsory subject, together with systematic • medical inspection of schools. Dental dispensaries should be established, to which all children with carious teeth should bo sent. AH volunteers should be allowed free to. consult a, dentist, who would be paid a regulation fee according to work done. The standard of the peopie would be raised by tho, subsidising of State dentists. Next-to a sanatorium for consumptives and a .children's. l hospital, he could not adviso anyone desirous of leaving 1 money to a good cause to do better than to found and endow a denta-l dispensary, (Applause.)

Auckland, September L. A young girl, whose parents reside at Waihi, was m town during "Fleet Week," 'and took her young brother out to see thesights. At a meeting of the Waterside Workers' Union to-night a motion was passed that tho union consider the attitude of Mr. Justice Sim in the farm labourers' dispute, is not in accordance with the spirit of the Arbitration Act as understood by tho mass of the workers of New Zealand, and suggests his immediate removal as president of the! Linn) for awards in the cases of Douglas Hamilton, actor (a member of Mr. Frank Thornton's Comedy Coin--pauy), who on August 12 last, saved a woman, from drowning in the roadstead at Gisborne, and of William Jones, who on June 2 last saved Percy Martin from drowning at Port Ahuriri, Napier. Captain Hawkes, of the Union Company's tug I'uatea, and Mr. Frank. Thornton support the' application in Mr. Hamilton's case. OSTRICH PLUMES. Auckland, August 31. By the Mokoia, which left for Sydney this evening, was- shipped a 'consignment of ostrich plumos frojn tho. Helvetia ostrich farm, Pukckoho, in. part execution of a cabled order for 1000 22-inch white ostrich plumes for tho officers of . the American fleet.' The shipment will , catch the fleet at Albany, and the balanco will.bo forwarded to meet the fleet at Manila.'
