Announcement is made of tho engagement of Miss Myrtlo Harbor, of Hobson Street, to Mr. Carl Luclers, of London. Miss' Richardson has gone to Christehurch to spend some weeks with her relations there. Mrs. C..E. Reynolds, of Dunedin, is staying with her mother, Mrs. Richardson. Mrs. and Miss Chapman are at present staying in Wanganui. Mrsi Preston, of Sumner, is tho guest of Mrs. Walter llislop. " Dominica" is assured that ,if tho mothers, fathers, arid friends of the. children wh6 are attending Tho Terraco School could only see the elaborate preparations that havo been mado for tho bazaar to bo opened today they would turn out in their hundreds to help tho children. The object of tho bazaar is tho enlargement .of tho pockethandkerchief spaces which at present serve as playgrounds for the seven hundred children attending the Terraco School; and in every room that has been decorated for today's bazaar thoro is somo earnest plea for this' larger playground. Ono blackboard bears the pitiful legend: "Wo play in tho road with tho baker's cart, tho butcher's cart, and tho State coal traction-ongino," aad in caso this plea fails to touch tho mothor's heart tho samo blackboard adds, for tho father's benefit, " Our footballs break ■tho windows." All yesterday tho children, young and old, wcro very hpd at work, and very effectively at work, too, decorating tho bare rooms with flags and greenery and cunningly contrived floral decorations. 'Iho pictures on the blackboards, which bayo been dono in coloured chalks by the pupils thomselves, are well worth going .to see, and it is said that the work dono by tho girls for tho various stalls is well worth going to buy.
One of tho most onjoyable dances held at Pirinoa took place in the Public Hall there on Friday ovening last, when about nfty couples worn present. The -interior of the hall was very elaborately decorated (writes our Eoatherston correspondent), and,"although' tho weather was not too encouraging, visitors wero prosent. from as far distant as Feathorston. During an. interval in tho proceedings _Mr. J. W. ICershaw, on'behalf, of, tho Lower Valley subscribers, to tho telephone exchange,, took the, opportunity of thanking Miss Barton, exchange, clerk, who is leaving tho district for Palmerston, North, for tlic able manner'in which she had (uiried out- her. duties, anil , said thoy ; 'all '.cgretted very 'much her departure. . /Mr. W.' Hunio also paid a few words'of compliment to Miss' Barton's work, and presented her v.'iih a purso of sovereigns and a lady's companion as a token of tho esteem in'which sho was held by the Lower Valley settlers. Dancing was interspersed with songs contributed by Messrs. Barton, Mackay, and Hawkc. Mr. Weiri Weiri gave a step dance, and pleasant dancing music was ployed by Mrs. A. Burt, of Feathorston. • Among the expccted arrivals by tho Sydney boat to-day aro Mr. and Mrs. Kane, 'who aro returning from a trip to tho Islands, and' Miss Kane, returning from England, and Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Rawson, who, after several years' residence, in West- Australia, aro on their way to Tomnka, whore Mr. Rawson has been appointed bank ma.uager. Tho hall, with its vestibule, balcony, and supper.:room, jv;as..most artistically decorated with palms, flax'bushes, and bunting. Tho music was supplied by tho Zingari Band. A great- 'many "pooplo 'were present; and tho ball was a compieto success. Tho honorary secretary, : Sir. • W. A. Churchill,, and t-ho, committee; Messrs. A. J. Robert, A. G. ; Stanley,-L. Audofson, A. Rawles, P. Jackson, and 0. Pavitt, spared no pains for the entertainment of 'thoir guests. the ladies present were Mesdamos Rooorts, Clinch, Mollish, Bcaro, and Allcndor, and tho ' Misses Patton, Hadfield (3), and Wood (2);
Yesterday afternoon in the Sydney Street Schoolroom tho Rev. T. H. and Mrs. Sprott gave an "At Homo" in honour of Mr. and Mrs. Mallinson, when a' Jargo number of people were present. During the afternoon' Mr. Robinson . sang soveral songs* delightfully. Mrs. ..Warren with . tho Misses Oswin Warren, Mesfcayer, and Bowles were in charge of the tea table. Mrs. Sprott received in a dress of black voile with trimming of cream lace. Mrs. Mallinson wore a trained frock of black crops do chino, with ostrich feather boa and black picture hat; Miss Campbell, dark blue cloth frock and black picture hat; Mrs. Fell, black silk with black plumed hat; Miss Richmond, m violet costumo with hat to match; Sirs. D Arcy Cliaytor, pale heliotrope with, wido hat trimmed with small flowers in delicate shades of pink, blue, and heliotrope; Mrs. Heaton Rhodes, dark green velvet and hat with large red roses; Miss Humphries, dark green velvet with vest of cream face, and cream plumed picture hat; Mrs. Richardson, brown costume; Mrs. Prouso, brown i.cloth frock, and hat with deep red roses; Miss Joseph, brown and black striped silk. Among others present were Dr. and Mrs. Hislop, Mr. and Mrs M'Nicol, Colonel and Miss Bauchop, Mr. and Mrs. Kay, Lady Miller, Mrs. and Miss Duncan, Miss.
