Tasman, has decided to replace her in tho Wellington-Nelson-Motucka service bv a steel twin-screw steamer, which will be built in the Old Country to specially suit tho trade. The new vessel will bo slightly larger than the Tasman, and will havo good passonger accommodation. She is» expected to arrive about May next, and in the meantime the s.s. Waverley will take up tho Tasman's running. In addition to tho above-mentioned steamer an order has already been placed for the construction of a vessel larger than the Alexander. This latter vessel is intended for the West Coast trade. When the two new steamers are in commission the Anchor Company's fleet will number seven vessels. THE MAKTJRA.

"Pair Play," of July 23, has an excellent illustration ,of the launch of the large twin-screw steamer Makura, which Messrs. Alex. Stephen and Sons, Ltd., of Linthouse, are building for the Union Steam Ship Company of New Zealand. Tho dimensions of the new steamer are:—l7oft. by sSft. by 35ft., and, although she is primarily intended for passenger service between New Zealand, Australia, and Vancouver, she will be able to carry a considerable quantity of cargo. To handle this the holds are equipped with hydraulic hoists, a system of cargo gear almost universal in the best'steamer lines on the Australian coast, and similar to those .fitted .on all tho steamers built by Messrs. Stephen for the colonial trade. Part of the cargo space will be devoted to frozen meat, etc., and for this purpose tho necessary machinery will be on the Hercules Anunonina system. We shall deal. : at greater length with the luxurious , passenger appointments at a later date, and'when the steamer is ready for service. Meantime, it may be stated that tho accommodation is for first, second, and third class. The steamer is built to the rules of ■the British Corporation, and under the supervision of Mr. J. R. Campbell, the Union Company's superintendent. The launch on Tuesday of last week was highly successful, and there was a large company present to " assist" Mrs. Ritchie (wife of Mr. J. W. Ritchie, 'a director of tho Union Company\in naming the vessel.

Yesterday, at 1.30 p.m., the Union fccmpany's steamer Whangape passed Farewell Spit on her way to Napier. - ' The Union Company advise that the Pukaki, instead of loading at Greymonth for Wellington, i« now-fixed to load for Lyttelton. At eleven yesterday morning the Union Company's steamer Arahnra arrived in Greymouth, and was timed to sail on the'return journey at 11 p.m. ; Yesterday afternoon, the New Zealand Shipping Company's lcft Wellington Lyttelton; after having completed discharge in quicker time than was expected. On Sunday the coastal steamer Defender arrived in'Karamea from Wellington, and will •load for this port.; The Ngunguru was expected to leave Ifaramea' .yesterday with a cargo of timber for Wellington. Messrs. Peterson and Bernech, third engineers of tho Hinemoa and Tutanekai respectively, are about to go up for higher tickets. Mr. Bernech (who is a son of Captain Bernech, of tho UnionCompany's service) is trying for .a. chief engi-; necr's certificate, "and Mr. Peterson a second' engineer's.
