CHARGE OF A TEMPTED MURDER
A DUtfKDIN CASE.

Dunedln, August 31. ,At the police Court to-day John Webster was charged 1 witli • having, on August 20, attempted to murder George Hubbard, and also with having attempted to murder his wife,' Maria Webster. Evidence for the prosecution was to the effect that accused went to .the house where his wife (who was not living with him) was staying, and demanded to' see her. . She refused to go to the door at first, but afterwards consented to do so. Accused wanted his'wife to go outside, but she-refused. Shortly afterwards accused pointed a revolver at' Mrs. Webster, 'but Downes,--the ' occupier- of the house, caught tho rovelver and forced it over accused's shoulder., A struggle ensued, accused freeing himself and then putting the in his pocket. Downes demanded possession-of- the revolver, but accused threatened to blow his brains out. Accused then went up tho street. Liiter on, he was bvertaken by George Hubbard, who said lie believed accused had firearms on hiin. Accused replied in the negative, but Hubbard expressed the. intention of searching him. According to Hubbard, accused then pointed a revolver at his stomach, but Hubbard knocked his hand down and tho bullet went between Hubbard's legs. When accused Was nirested ' lie handed the police .sergeant a letter containing his 'will. Accused, who reserved his defence, was committed'for trial on'each charge. Application for bail, was refused.
