Mrs. O'Connor has issued invitations for an "At Home" 011 Thursday, September 3. There is to bo a sale of (lowers, cakes, and sweets at tho 'Private Nurses' Hostel in •Willis. Street on Friday afternoon, which will also servo as an informal opening of tho new Home. Dr. Hogg, who has boon delivering a series of lectures in connection with the St- John Ambulanco First Aid Class, was' presented at the. conclusion of tho series with a handsome cut-glass and oak l inkstand. Miss Nina Thomas,' in' making the presentation on_ hehalf pf the members of the class, very cordially expressed their appreciation of the doctor's services. .' Dr. Hogg thanked the class, and assured them that his duties had been a pleasure. Yesterday afternoon, at their homo in Boulcott Tcrrace, the lion. Dr. Findlay andMrs. Findlay gave an "At Home" which was attended by between two and threojiundred guests. Afternoon tea was served in three rooms, with the result that, in spite of tho largo 'number present; the rooms were , never uncomfortably crowded. In the diningrooin the decorations were carried out in shades of purple. The table centro; was of very pale • lavender silk, over which were placed little mats of beautiful lace. Irises, purplo anemones and violets carried out tho colour scheme, ■ and these wore mingled with maidhenhair and asparagus fern, while trails of sir.ilax wore carried across tho table. In another room tho decorations woro all' of yellow daffodils, and scarlet anemones adorned the third. ' A band was stationed in the hall, and. in one of the upper rooms a fine pianola supplied excellent music. Mrs. Findlay received in a handsome frock of black silk, relieved with cream lace. Among tho guests were included the Premier and Lady Ward, tho Mayor, members of the Ministry, and members of both Houses of the Legislature. '. : Mr. and Mrs. Mawley, of "Ditton," have returned from a visit to Sydney. Mrs. Armstrong is visiting -Masterton just now, and is Staying at. "Brooklyn." • We havo received tho following interesting items of nows from our Palmerston North correspondent. •• Miss Preece and Miss 0. Preece havo returned from tho Wairarapa, and are spending their holidays in Palmerston. Miss Gladys Somervillo is visiting Mrs. X. A. Abraham. - - : . Mr.. A. Southoy Baker, an old resident of Palmerston, but now living in Auckland, spent tho week-end here. ' ■ Mr. qnd Mrs. Edward Fitzgerald (Raurunui) aro spending; a few days with Mr. and Mrs. Hunter-Brown.
Miss Taylor's; Nga Tawa School, Marton, had a vory' successful breaking-up on Friday afternoon, when a play was, performed by tho. pupils.', Tho function took place in the Marton Hall,, and was . witnessed by over ono hundred invited guests, including tho parents of tho pupils and old scholars. Among those 'who went '■ from Palmerston wero Miss ..Macintiro . and Miss R. Lyons. Afternoon; tea wa6 prettily served and dispensed by Miss Taylor and her pupils. Miss Stanford- has gone- to spend her holidays in Wanganui'. * '. ■ Oil Friday afternoon Lady Plunket opened the new wing of the All. Saints' Children's Home; - Her Excellency was attended •by Captain Hardy and Mrs. Waterfield, and made a pleasant littlo speech, especially applauding r the management for admitting boys as well as girls. She was shown over the'home, by tho Rev. C. C. and Mrs. Harper, after--which- afternoon tea .was served; Tho homo received many gifts, on tho occasion of tho opening of tho new additions, including firewood, -beds and bedding, food, and useful articles of furniture. It has now been in full swing for two years, is supported by voluntary subscriptions, and tho blooming appearancoof tho'sixteen inmates, ranging in ago from four ,to twelvo, reflects the greatest credit on tho matron (MissFoley) and her assistants. Mi;, and Mrs. Goring Johnston have been staying at the Grand Hot-el for the last ten days, , as' their- new -.house vwas . not . quito ready. They hopo to movo 1 this''week-to thflir new home, tho hoiiso formerly occupied by Mr. E. N.-Barraud, which has been much .added to,'and is now ono of the largest in Palmcrston. .. i Miss Madgo Pascal has gone, to 'visit friends in. Nelson.
