SIRES OF THE SEASON. CONQUEROR.. Breeders in the "WairaTapa district will this season have'at'their services tho thoroughbred stallion Conqueror, who has already made his mark as a 1 successful siroof racehorses. Conqueror was easily the best colt of his year, and won tho Wolcomo Stakes, tho Great Northern Foal Stakes,; the. Middlo Park Plate, tho Dunedin Eclipse Stakes, and other'races, his total' winnings as a two-yoar-old amounting to over £1800. In the Welcome Stakes, four furlongs, he estab-! lished an Australasian record (4G l-ssec.) for the distance, which has uot-sinco been beaten. Anyone who sees Conqueror is bound to like him, for he is a magnificent.bay horse, showing remarkablo. quality.. In, the show ring ho has never been beaten, and his breeding leaves little to bo desired. Ho is by . Medallion (siro of Achilles), from Siesta (winner of the Welcome Stakes) by Traducer (imp.) from Hammock (imp.) by Orest, and consequently belongs to Bruce Lowe.'s No., (2) family, which has been : represented ; in the twenty leading stallions' in England more consistently than any but the No. 3 : family. During the time that ho has been at the stud lie has sired a large number of winners, including Motoa, Chivalry, Waipaku, Ability, Ard Reigh, William I, Naumai, Toa Tuhi, Tawhera, etc. Waipaku holds, tho New Zealand record for a mile and a furlong, and the majority of Conqueror's stock havo shown exceptional brilliancy. For the present season his fee is to bo only 12 guineas, and at that price his list should fill rapidly.
PAHIATUA RACINC CLUB.. At the annual general meeting of the Pahiatua Racing Club held on' Thursday at the Commercial Hotel, Pahiatua,- the balancesheet which was adopted showed the receipts for the year to. be £2618 19s. Bd., as against £2226 19s. Bd. expended, the balance of assets over liabilities being £1587 lis. Id. Tho following officers were elected for the ensuing season: —President, Mr. J. Breeds (reelected); vice-presidents, Messrs. A. Yulo, A. Macfarlane, and P. J. Quirk; judge, Mr. Hnrtgill; treasurer, Mr. H. M'Sherry; clerk of course, Captain J. B. Wliyte; clerk of scales, Mr. V. J. Prosser; totalisator clerk, Mr.' E. Darley; honorary surgeons, Drs. Dawson, Beard, and Mules; hon. veterinary surgeon, Mr. Owen; time-keepers,' Messrs. R. Bee and Geo. Oxley; auditors, Messrs. 6. NOTES AND COMMENTS. The annual raco meeting of the Marton Jockey Club takes place on nest Wednesday and Thursday. s Jockeys G. Price, C. Jenkins, W. Price, A. Oliver, and C. O'Neill wero riding at the Wanganui Hunt Club's meeting. The two first-named each rode winners. Acceptances for the Horowhenua Hack Racing Club's meeting close on Friday next. Mr. A. C. Pearce, of Wellington, has purchased a half share in the . Knight Errant filly Royal Maid, which will run in the interests of the new partnership at the Marton meeting. Faux pas, whose name appears among the Horowhenua Club's entries,, is the Stepniak —Mist filly in tho Porirua stable. The youngster . has been leased by Mr.-J. H. Prosser for tho period of her racing career. Sea King and Cross Battery were shipped to Sydney by tho Maheno yesterday in chargo of W. J. Taggart. L. 6. King, who is to rido tho horses in Australia, will probably, leave next week. Ghoorka has been permanently retired from tho racing track, and is to go to tho stud. , The owner of Sir Artegal considers that the Avondale handicapper has slightly overrated the chestnut gelding, and in co'nsequenco tho horse is not likely to make tho trip north. Mr. S. Ncttlefold rctuinc'd to Australia by tho Maheno yesterday. During the week Mr. Nottlefold purchased Littlo Mary (Merriv.ee —Moira) and Ngatiapa (Tupuhi—Kalraoa), and the two horses were shipped by the Sydney boat yesterday. Sis trotting horsos wero also aboard tho Maheno. The Soult filly Aimeo Soult (own sister to Gronadier), which was recently purchased in Christchurch by Mr. Prosser, is to go to the stud, and will be mated with Achilles. The pony Balgonie, which won the Wren Thousand in Melbourne last month, has been sold to an Indian buyer. The price is said to have been 700 guineas. . Tho sale of Motoa, reported in yesterday's issue, has fallen through. It transpires that Mr. S. Nettlefold was tho, would-be buyer, and tho Conqueror horse was brought down to Wellington yesterday, with a view to being shipped to Sydney in the afternoon. However. the veterinary surgeon who -examined the horse was unablo to give tho v.sual certificate, and in consequence the sale was 1 not completed. It is understood that Motoa is suffering from a mild form •of laryngitis. Some of the racing clubs licensing bookmakers, instead of following tho practico ! of licensing inside bookmakers at £20 a day and outsido bookmakers at £10 a day, mako no distinction, and charge a uniform feo irrespective of position. It is questionable if such a step is in the best interests of tho clubs from a financial point of view. Since tho now gaming laws came into operation the bookmakers, in most instances, have considerably augmented this revenues of the different clubs, and the small, bookmakers havo been largo contributors in this respect. A recent instance is the Canterbury Jockey Club's Grand National mooting, where on tho first day forty-six bookmakers were licensed to bet in the Leger at £10 and nineteen in tho Paddock a:t £20. Had tho feo been £20 a day it is not likely that anything like the same number (or half tho number) of outsido bookmakers > would havo taken out licenses. This is a point that appears worthy of consideration. HOROWHENUA HACK RACING CLUB'S MEETING. WEIGHTS FOR FIRST DAY. (dy teleceaph—press association.) Wanganui, August 28.
