Mr. Robert Leo was, at yesterday's meeting of the Wellington Education Board, reelected chairman of' that body for tho ensuing term, on' tho motion of Mr. A.' H. Vile, seconded by Captain T. W. M'Donald. Mr. Richard Henry, of Kapiti Island, has been appointed an inspector of sea-fishing. Tho Education Board has accepted the resignation of Mr. A. Turner, head-teacher at Mauriceville School. Mr. J. Dineen, truant officer under the AVellington Education Board, has been granted a fortnight's leavo of absence. Mr. Charles I. Nathan has been' appointed Acting Vice-Consul for Sweden at Auckland during the absence of Mr. S. J. Nathan. Mr. Eustace Lano has been appointed a commissioner to classify pastoral runs in tho Hawko's Bay Land District vice Mr. C. R. Bailies. Lieutenant A. A. S. Hinty has resigned his commission iii the Hawera Rifles, and his name has been placed upon the unattached list. Messrs. C. J. Cornwcll, L'. J. Meredith, F. R. Webster, and R. H. Stevenson have been appointed cadets in the Department of Agriculture. The death is reported at Castle Street., Dunedin, of Miss Mary' Stewart, sister of Mr. G. L. Stewart, secretary to the Wellington Education Board.
Mrs. M. Cohen, of AVillis Street, who met with an accident more than a fortnight ago, has slightly improved in health, but is still confined to .her bed. C r >~" Captain A._' E. _ Loach resigned the command of '"fife '(jadets l at Christchurch, and has been appointed captaiu of tho. Christchurch Cycle -Corps. ■; ■ Lieutenant P. R.. Fordham (formerly of Wellington) has been promoted to be captain of the Dunedin Rifles. Lieutenant A.' E. Wolstenh'olme has 'been promoted to tho captaincy of tho Dunedin Cycle Corps. Mr. A. N. Poison has been appointed shorthand-writer to the Justice Department. Messrs. H. Sergeant, of Wanganui, and A. E. Watkin, of Urenui, have resigned their commissions as Justices of the Peace. ! Mr. William Allen, a member of the Wellington Education Board, who is at present on a visrtrTß'+lre Old Country, has beeii granted ■an extension of leavo from the board for a further period of three months. An Aucklahd Press Association telegram states that tho latest report as to-tho condition of Mr. J. M'Lachian, M.P., who has hoen seriously ill at Aucldand, is that he is very much bettor, and proposes to go on a brief visit to Rotorua to-day. Tho Colonial Auxiliary Forces long service medal has been awarded to Captain (Adjutant) J. P. Oakes, of the Canterbury Garrison Artillery (20 years' service); Lieut.Colonel Thos. Jowsey, C.M.G. (nearly 21 years' service), and Captain Walter C. F. Carnoross, M.L.C. (nearly 21 years' service). Leave of absence has been granted by the Education Board to tho undermentioned teachers Miss L. Braithwaite, Carterton (one month from September 1); Miss Davidson, Roseneath (to September 4); Miss G ; . lleynell, Island Bay (one month from August 2); Miss S. Baker, Johnsonville (to September 14); Mr. East, Clyde Quay; Mr. J. B!. Hopkirk, 'Brooklyn (four days); Miss J;. Hutchen,- Newtown (a fortnight's extension); Mr. Wm. : Foster, 'Mount Cook Boys' (two days). I
