A RECORD NUMBER IN GLASGOW.', (by telegraph—peess association—copyright.) London, August 25. The Lord Provost of 'Glasgow states that the number of unemployed in the city is beyond all previous experience. < —— WORKLESS INCREASING, TRADE FALLING. Evidence of the further increase of unemployment at Home is furnished by the reports tor June of the trade uni.ons, .and also of the Central (UnempMyed) Body for London. Of the -268 trade unions, with a membership of 653,327, making'returns, 8;2 per' cent. (53.786 men) were unemployed at'tho end of June, as compared with 7.9 per cent, in the proceding month, and >3:6 per cont. in June, of last year: During June the Central Body for London received nearly twice as many s applications for work as were received during Juno of 1907. The figures are -1381 for June, 1007, and 7492 for. June, 1908. In Juno,- 1907, there were. 703 unemployed women on the books; in-June, 1908,. 1299. For the six months ended June, British trade declined ' by .£46,374,249 — imports .£80,050,175, exports ,£16,324,074. During tho same period France's imports declined .by J0,444,040, and -her exports by ,£6,998,244. The most serious drop was. in manufactured goods.
