Tho Imlralema, from New York, via Melbourne, Sydney, anil Auckland, is expected to arrive in Wellington about September 11, and has 1310 tons of cargo for this port. THE BARQUE PALGRAYE. Cable messages' received at Sydney last week state that tho four-masted barque Palgravo, 3078 tons register, which left Newcastlo on June' 4 last for Coquimbo, lias been totally wrecked oil' the Point Lenague do Vaca near her destination. It is, believed'that tho crew has boon saved, but nothing definite is yot known. Tho Palgrave was ono of tho largest Bailing vessels under the British flag, and visited Sydney for docking last April before proceeding to Newcastle. She was built in ISS-1 by W. Hamilton and Co., at Glasgow., to the order of the Ship Barcube Company. Her principal dimensions are: Length, 322 ft.' sin.; beam, • 49ft. 2in.; depth, 25ft, 4in. EARLY WOOL CHARTERS. The names of three Bucknall steamers that will tako tho wool berth at Australian ports this season have just been announced (says tho "Commercial News"). The first will bo tho s.s. Baralong,, which is due at Port Pirio from South Africa shortly, and after loading deadweight there is to come to Sydnoy, to commence loading; tho second is tho Buceros, now shipping a cargo of jarrah at Bunbury for New Zealand ports, and tho third is the s.s. Kazembe, now en route to Melbourne, Sydney, and New Zealand ports from New York, under the auspices of the American and Australian Line. The Baralong will sail early in October, the • Buceros about the end of tho same month, and tho Kazembe early in November. AOTEA AT DUNEDIN. As reported previously, • 'tlio Shaw, Savill liner Aotea arrived at Port Chalmers from London direct early last Saturday morning. Tho vessol occupied 4S days on the voyage out, which was uneventful throughout. • Captain Prosser having retired from the sea in order to settle down in business at Auckland, Captain Kirby, who was chief officer' during her last trip, has been promoted to the command of the Aotea, and has associated with him tho following officers:—Chief, Mr. G. B. Davidson (ex Kurnara); second, Mr. K. S. Manners -(ex Arawa); third, Mr. F. A. C. Heslop; fourth, Mr.. E. .C. • Upton "'(ex- Mamari). Captain, Kirby, who commands tho Aotea at present, served Ins apprenticeship on the Shaw, Savill Company's clipper ship Pleiades a couple of decades ago. Ho remained in that fine vessel until he attained the rank of chief officer, and then went into steam, where he has remained ever since. The promotion of the jovial skipper has caused much, gratification to his many friends in shipping circles.
It is reported: that Captain Woodfieldi late of tho barque Forthbank, has been appointed mastor of the s.s. Yeddoy
Last night the Patea Shipping Company's steamer liapiti was expected to be refloated. Monday night's attempt was unsuccessful, r Shortly after noon yesterday the' Defender left Wellington for Karamea,' but last ovening she had not cleared the Heads, and was at anchor in Kau Bay. Tho barque Gladys, now on her way'from Liverpool to Wellington and Dunedin, is commanded by Captain George Perriam, who commanded the ship Nelson during her last voyage to New Zealand. '

A cablo ( message has been received in Sydney advising that the Australian Union steamer Indraghiri arrived at- London from Australian ports on August 13, and is timed to leave New Tork ■ for Melbourne; Sydney, and New Zealand ports with cargo shipped under the auspices of the United Tyser Line on September 2G, Yesterday the Union Company's steamer Talune left Dunedin in the Moana's run to Sydney. .She is due here to-morrow morning, and in the afternoon sails for Napier, Gisborne, and Auckland, where, on arrival, she tranships. to tho Mokoia, which returns to Sydney.
Mr. S. Vint,, chiof officer of j the Aparima, had to leave that ■ vessel at Calcutta and go into tho hospital (says an exchange). His place was filled by promoting the second officer to acting chief. Tho third officor has undertaken the second mato's duties, a new appointment being made for third officer.
A private message received by the i"Sydney Commercial News" states that Newcastle Harbour is silting up in parts,'and is now so bad that groat difficulty is experienced in navigating vessels from one part to the other,, and unless some powerful dredges are at onco put to work to remove the obstructions it is feared that the business of the port will soriously suffer. Although (adds our contemporary) the Government treats, any matter concerning improvements to Nowcastle Harbour in a very dilatory manner, it is hoped that the urgency of this ono will be fully realised and at once remedied.
