KARORI BOROUGH COUNCIL
• FORTNIGHTLY MEETINC. The fortnightly meeting of the Karori Borough Council .was held last night, there being present:'Tho Mayor (Mr. C.'l. Dasent), and Councillors Spiers, Hammond-, Harris, Lissington, Wedde, Smith, Bradnock, and Raine. ■'; " ).' . ''
A deputation consisting of five ratepayers of the Borough of Karori—Messrs. KilminEter, Campion, Hooper, Mulane, and Mosham, who described themselves as being engaged in farming pursuits, and whose lands, aggregating 1600 acres, were, it was stated, bo situated and; of , such nature as rendered them suitablb : only for farming purposes, and therefore should not bo included within a borough in which the rates wero assessed upon a suburban basis, waited upon the Council to ask.its assent to their lands being included within the boundaries of tho Makara County. . A' , petition setting forth tho request of the deputation had been prepared for. presentation to Parliament. Messrs. Kihainster, Hooper, and Campion addressed the Council in support of tho re-' quest of the deputation: The .rates, they contended, bore very heavily upon them, and' they considered; that the.. nature' of. their lands: mountainous sheen • country, properly suited them for inclusion- in the Makara County, where the lands and pursuits were similar. ■ ".' ' .-• "Do you think that you will be any better off in the Makara County?" asked the Mayor. . : , ' . .■' ■ "We 11 , , -, replied Mr. Hooper, ' "we can't be worse." (Laughter.) He went on to say that the money expended by tho Council on their portions of the borough' had not; benefited them very niuch. What they objected to was the special rates, tramways,'lighting, etc., in return for which, they received no convenience.- "If you'll run the train-'. lino along to us, we'll stay in, Karori,", tho speaker concluded, amid laughter. The deputation then withdrew. ' The Mayor Bam that the matter was really one for consideration at a.special meeting. There was no, doubt that ,the farmers in tho outlying portions of the.borough suffered very great hardships in having to,pay suburban rates. Councillor Wedde-suggested that the Amalgamation Committee deal with tho question. . ''you mean the 'Secession' Committee?" playfully corrected Councillor Smith. Councillor Hammond mqved that the request be granted, subject to such conditions as would _bo framed by a sub-committeo to consist of the Mayor (Mr, Dasent) . and Councilors Wedde, Spiers, and Smith. whicTw^caS 1 SCCmm th ° motion ' The Public Works Committee of tho Council advised that tho request'of tho Donald Street ratepayers that their street be regraced could not bo granted, as tho cost would he too great; and that the plans and specifications submitted by Mr. T \S with reference'to the reading of the" Evelyn
An application from Mr. H. W. Moss with rorcrence to certain work .to be done by the Council by way of compensation for land taken for road_works, was referred to tho Compensation Committee.
