In tho Police Court this mominr; Robert Wells, who was found liot ; guilty by the Supremo Court of recoivins stolon boilers was charged with carrying on business as a second-hand dealer without a liccnso. Mr, A. Biirnard, who represented Wells, characterised tho action "as a way of getting on to the mani" and explained that, as Wells had lain three months in prison awaiting trial the petty charge now made against him constituted an extraordinary proceeding oil tho part of tho Department or someone. Tho law did not provide compensation for a man ultimately proved to bo innoocnt who had to wait in prison for threo months until such innocence was established. It was pointed out that Wells had been breaking tho law for several months, and was liable to a penalty of £500 or £600. Ho was fined £5.
