On Saturday tlie Shaw-Savill liner Aotea, trom London direct, ariivod at Port Chalmers, bhe has 3800 tons of cargo for Dunedin, including transhipments for Oaniaru and Timaru, and GOO tons for Lyttelton. THE HINEMOA. The Government steamer Hinemoa. was at Manukau on Saturday, and is expected to arrive in Wellington early this week. The Marine Department advise that she is expected to leave here towards the end of this week to make calls at tho Cook Strait lighthouses. THE INDEAGHIEI. Messrs. Bannatyne and Co. report that the Tyser Company's steamer Indraghiri is fixed to go on the loading berth at New York for Australian and New Zealand ports. She is expected to leave or. September 2G, and comes to Melbourne, Sydney, Auckland, and Wellington, where she should arrive about December 7. THE CEVIC. Advices received by the local agents of the Shaw, Savill, and Albion Co.'s liner Cevic report that she was expected to leave Sydney last Saturday or Sunday, for Wellington, via Auckland. Tho vessel, which left Liverpool on June 20, is now expected to arrive in Wellington about September 3 or 1. A RECORD LOW FREIGHT. i It is reported that the British steamer Vancouver, which recently left Newcastle for Valparaiso, with a cargo of coal, had been taken up on time charter for three months at Is. .lid. per ton—that is, deadweight capacity (says an Australian exchange). This figure is stated to be tho lowest freight that lias ever been paid for a tramp steamer in the Australian trade, and tends to show how depressed the freight market is. Many shipping people think that it would have been better to lay a vessel up rather than accept such a low freight. Of course, that is a matter of opinion. Some shipowners believe in running their vessels no matter how low the freight market is. Their idea is that freights may. improve, and then again if ' freights-are bad in-one part of the world they may., be better 1 on the other-side where tho vessel is bound-to. For instance, all freights are bad in Australia at tho present, while on* tho West Coast of South America they are much better, and in consequence somo ships that have been carrying coal from Newcastle to the''West Coast for-the last two or three years have lately been fixed to load nitrate home to the U.K. or Continent. At this timo .last year the timo charter of most tramp steamers ranged from 3s. 6d. to ss. per ton, and then it.was stated that tho prices werelow. Only last month a tramp steamer which came to Sydney in ballast from one of the American ports lost .£2OOO on the trip, and it is. well known to most people interested in steam' tonnage that at tho present time there are many tramp steamers afloat which have never paid a dividend, but simply meet expenses.

At eight yesterday morning the ketch Lizzie Taylor left Timaru for Wellington.' This morning the Putild'is expected 'to bo placed on the Patent Slip for overhaul. Enrly yesterday morning tlia steamer ' St. Westcort for Noumea with a cargo ofl'dtfSi.v. yw-iMn

On Saturday evening the Rimutaka left Timaru for Lyttelton, where she arrived in the Stream early yesterday morning. ■ Captain Dreivette is to rejoin the' Komata within a few days. Captain J. Stringer is at present in temporary command of that vessel. On Saturday afternoon tho steamer Ripple arrived from Gisboine to replenish bunkers, and a few hours later proceeded to Port Chalmers.

Shortly before noon yesterday the HuddartParlcer steamer Wimmera arrived in Auckland from Sydney. She is due at Wellington next Friday.

' Dartford, the Union Company's Ehip, after discharging at Sydney, proceeds to Newcastle to put out the remainder of her cargo, and then loads coal for Wellington. To-morrow the Government training ship Amokura is expected to reach-Wellington from Auckland, where she proceeded to ■ assist in welcoming . tho American Fleet. Yesterday the Union Company's steamer Kamona was expected to leave .Westport for Wellington, and to-morrow the Komata is fixed to sail on a similar errand. It is expected that Anchor Line steamer Alexander will complete discharge at Miramar this morning. She is to load at-Wellington today for Nelson and West Coast. Messrs. Levin and' Co. are advised that the steamer Lord. Softon left San Francisco on August 2 for Auckland, where, under ordinary circumstances, she would bo due on September 1. During her voyage, however, she is to- search for the overdue steamer Aeon. Saturday's "Lyttelton Times" saysTho Union Company's barque Loch Lomond is thirty-seven days out from Newcastle to-day. That period is not by any means tho longest occupied by a sailing vessel between Newcastle and New Zealand. About twenty-six years ago a barque, inappropriately named tho Speedwell, took forty-five days to go from Newcastle to Kaipara.
