He could not eco much of it, as all wa;s still under frozen snow, except some of the north-west faces where warm rains from that quarter cleared patches. J. ho sheep are all very woak, and the mortality will probably continue. The loss cannot oo estimated. It took four and a. half hours to ride 14. miles from Burke's i ass to_lekapo, and from there he went to the head of the lake in a motor launch. Tho snow is disappearing very slowly, and it is now all ice on the flats. Nor'-west rains are hoped for to clear it away. NEW ROMAN CATHOLIC SCHOOL , DEDICATED BY ARCHBISHOP REDWOOD. Napier, August 23. The Marist Brothers' new brick school in Shakespeare Road, erccted to replace the wooden structure which was partially destroyed by fire, was dedicated by Archbishop Redwood this afternoon. Prior to the ceremony there was . a large procession, headed by the band from St. Patrick's Church, through the town to the school. In the course of his address the Archbishop congratulated the Catholics of Napier on the erection of the school, and said it was one of the many evidences that tho Catholio body throughout New Zealand were determined that their children should have true religious education as well as perfect secular instruction. Tho cost came from th« pocketa of Catholics and in numerous cases from the pockets of the very poor. Tho Mayor of Napier (Mr. J. Vigor Brown) offered his congratulations, and Mr. J. C. Westall, a member of the Napier High School Board of Governors, also spoke;' Tho Archbishop said tho cost of the building and furnishing of tho school was £1400. Nearly £60 was obtained by a collection after to-day's proceedings. REINFORCED CONCRETE BRIDGE. ' Timaru, August 22. The Geraldine and Levels Comity Councils havo conjointly agreed to accept a tender at £9500 for a bridge over the Opihi in reinforced concrete in preference to one in ironbark at £8000., The bridge, designed by Mr. F. W. Marchant, C.E., is to bo 960 ft. long in 24 spans of 40ft., and 20ft. roadway, piers of three pajrs of piles composed of heavy steel beams encased lin concrete. Tho superstructure is to be of concrete $ide girders 7ft. high slightly arched; the roadway 7in. thick, stiffened, by transverse webs every five feet, steel rods to bo embodied to give* tensional strength. Tho concrete will be mado of shingle from the riverbed and New Zealand coment.

CHARGE OF ATTEMPTING TO MURDER.

. Dunedin, August 23. John Webster, who was arrested on Thursday night on a charge of attempting to murder George Hubbard, is to be further charged with attempting to murder his wife. The incident which led to the latter charge, occurred shortly .before Webster is alleged to have discharged the revolver at Hubbard. CHINESE SHOOTING AFFRAY Auckland, August 22. ■ The coroner's inquest on the body of Fong Mong Chee, who died from wounds inflicted in a fight with knife and gun, resulted in a verdict that death' was caused by .a gunshot wound feloniously caused •by • Louie Shue Hock. The coroner Said the verdict amounted to one of manslaughter. ACCIDENTALLY BURNED TO DEATH, ; Napier, August- 23. At an. inquest held on Saturday touching the death of an old woman named Clara Ford, whose dead body was found after a fire at her; residence in Carlyle Street on Friday morning, the jury returned the . following, verdict: —"That deceased was accidentally burned to death on the morning of August 21, but there is no evidence to show how the fire originated." Mr. John Marks, an Auckland resident, claims to have solved the problem of a reversible turbine, and Press representatives who wero shown the working model • state that it appeared to demonstrate tho truth of the assertion, the steam being shut off and the engine set in the opposite direction in a few seconds. „ CONCILIATION BOARD.' Napier, August 23. A sitting of the Conciliation Board was held on Saturday to consider the demands of the Hawke's Bay Fishermen's Union. The members of tho Board in attendance were Messrs. F. . Bedford (who presided), H. Inniss, and A. H. Cooper. Conferences were held, but the parties were unable to agree on tho question of wages. Evidence as to wages was tendered hy the Union, but not by the employers. The Board adjourned to bit ill Wellington on Wednesday. GREY OWLS. Dunedin, August 23. The Aotea, which arrived yesterday after an uneventful passage, shipped 65 little grey owls beforo leaving London, and. of theso GO came to hand in splendid condition.
