The estate of Mr. George Coper, a wellknown English bookmaker aud landowner, is reported to be nearly half a million. COTTON SPINNING: REDUCTION IN WAGES. London, August 21. • The Manchester cotton spinners have decided to reduce thft wages of operatives by 5 per cent., and threaten a lock-out if the reduction is declined. (The intention of the cotton spinners was announced in a cablegram 'early in the month, which also stated that the 5 per cent, reduction of wages would affect 150,000 operatives.) NEW AMBASSADOR AT TANGIER. London, August 21. Mr. Reginald Lister, Councillor to the British Ambassador in Paris, succeeds Sir G. A. Lowther as Ambassador at Tangier. (The Hon. Reginald Lister, M.V.0., born in 1865, third son of Baron Ribbesdale, has been a Minister Plenipotentiary in the Diplomatic service since 19d6. From 1902 to 1901 he was Secretary to Legation at Copenhagen; in 19041905 ouncillor to tho Embassy at Romo; bud 6inco 1905 Councillor to the Embassy in Paris.) FIRE THREATENS YOSEMITE VALLEY. San Francisco, August 21. Forest fires are sweeping along tho Yosemite Valley (Mariposa County, California), and threaten tho giant redwoods.

It was understood that tho retiring President, Senor Jose Pardo, would hold office till September; an attempt on his life about a week ago may have hastened the transition.) COLLIER MISSING. Mr. Rolleston, tho newly-appointed New Zealand Trade Commissioner, sailed by tho Athenic. Ho visited Chambers of Commorce and Manufactures in London and tho provinces, and was well received everywhere, and was afforded tho fullest information. WEST AUSTRALIAN ELECTIONS. Perth, August 22. Parliament has been' dissolved. Polling day has been fixed for September 11.
