WAR IN MOROCCO.
A CRUSHING DEFEAT. ARMY OF ABDUL AZIZ IN FULL RETREAT. SEVERAL CHIEFS KILLED. (DV TELEGRAPH —I'BESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT.) (Roc. August 24, 12.15 a.m.) Morocco, August 23. Mulai Hafid's forces inflicted a crushing defeat, ou the troops of Abdul Aziz, 50 miles from Marrakosh. The remnants of the army of Abdul Aziz aro in full retreat towards tho French zone in the Shawia district. During tho-retreat the shattered force repelled tho attacks of hostile tribes. Several Kaids and chicfs were killed. MULAI HAFID'S POLICY. A telegram recently published by tho "Matin" stated that "Mulai Hafid, who is installing his followers in the houses of tho officials of the Government of Abdul Aziz at Fez, is emphasising tho character of his reign by causing all tho lamps and electric lights in his brother's palace to bo torn down and the portraits of European Sovereigns to be removed. Everything recalling European civilisation has, it is said, been banished from tho premises of the now Government." The cociTespondent adds that after tho liberal tendencies of tho regime of Abdul Aziz there is now a sudden return to'the fanaticism and barbarism of former times. A Casablanca telegram stated that emissaries from Mulai Hafid had arrived at Sottat, and were conducting an agitation against tho Freuoh among tho tribes which had made their submission.. The Paris "Temps" recently published evidence to show that Mulai Hafid, while professing a desire for a good understanding with France, describes himself, in letters to native tribes, as having risen in response to Mussulman appeals in order to drive out. the foreigners.
