DEATH OF "UNCLE REMUS."
AUTHOR OF THE "BRER RABBIT" STORIES. Mr. Joel Chandler Harris, the author of "Uncle llcnms," died at his home, Atlanta, Georgia, on July 4, in his sixtieth year. Mr. Harris drew the inspiration for his negro dialect stories from listening as a chiid to negro folk-lore on tho plantation. His Brer Fox and Brer Rabbit phrases have in less than thirty years become part of the English language, notably tho one "to lie low and say nuwn." , Ho claimed no credit for giving tho fables to tho world, saying that he was morolv a reporter, and no onowas more astonished than lie at tho immediate success of "Undo Reinus," the collection of stories told by an aged negro to a child. The work ranis on the one hand with iEsop and on the other with tho "Jungle Book." Mr. Harris was a busy journalist in Atlanta, a shy man but a delightful recanfcour, to whom children were a largo part of his life. Simplicity and naturalness wore his characteristics, and theso won liim his in. ternational success.
