Tho matter, in which the' Council took most •interest yesterday afternoon was Mr. 'Paul's ihotion for a . return showing details of office premises rented by the Government in ten 06 tho principal cities and towns. Thero was sonio sovero criticism of the present scattering of' Government' Departments all over Wellington, but, tlio Council supported tho Attorney-General in declining to give tho information asked for,- and'thus tlio discussion .was. without apparent result. Tho debate .opened the''other' day by -Mr. Barr on the,position of tho mafriod -worker was.contained, arid again adjourned.
The afternoon passed off very- quietly .in tho House. Fivo local Rills wcro advanced various s£ages,' and ' tho . discussion was of littlo general interest, At.S'p.m. a_niotion to pass into Committee of Supply to discuss tho Estimates was proposed, and before being oarriod afforded tho Opposition another opportunity to plead, with tho Government for Departmental reports*not yet down.

■ The most interesting' debate of the evening, .howover, ensued on tho .Native Department Estimates. Mr. Ngata. entered into a keen criticism of the Native Land . Court m'cthorls, tho smallness of tho salaries of the Judges and their officials of the Department, tho inadequate numbers- of the Judges to copo with tho work, and further kindred matters. Other; members, with a knowledge of Nativo affairs, supported Mr. Ngata's remarks, and tho Nativo Minister, though combating a good deal of what was said, was moro conciliatory and promising in his' attitude than formerly. . - ' ■ ■ -
