A number of occupiers of sections on tho south'side of Wingficld Street aro stated 'to ltavo encroached four feet on to the public street, whoso width is thus reduced from 30 feofc to 26 feet. Councillor Fletcher brought tip the matter at the meeting of tho City Council last evening, and :movod that the Council assert its authority, and take steps to have the street restored to its original breadth. . Tho motion was carried. A deputation representative of Northland residents waited on tho Mayor (Hon. T. W. Hislop) yesterday afternoon, with regard to section 6 of the Wellington City Empowering Bill, which provides for tho levying of a drainago rato upon that part of Karori included in tho city boundaries. Mr. Findlay M'Leod,_ who acted as spokesman, said that tho residents were apprehensivo tlmt tho rato might be levied on that part of the city without tho resident's concornod obtaining within a reasonable time tho advantages if tho drainago system. They wished to impress upon the Mayor and councillors their claims to havo a water system as well as a drainage system as soon as possible. In their, opinion tho drainago works should bo commenced within the next thrco months, and the water supply system even at an earlier date. In reply, tho Mayor stated that ho would consult the City Engineer as to when thoso works could be* put in hand. The object of tho Bill was to extend tho advantages of tho drainago system which it had been arranged should bo extended to Melrose and the other new portions of tho city, including Northland, and that there should bo accompanying the benefits of the j system the burden of the cost of the undertaking. The citizens interested, he added, need havo no apprehension that the burden would bo cast upon .them without the corresponding benefits.
