Mr.-W. H. Taft, Republican candidate for the Presidency, is by origin a Now Engender; An early ancestor, Robert Taft, settled at Mendon, Massachusetts, over two conturies ago. Tho present Secretary's father, Alphonso Taft, was a leading lawyer and judge.in Cincinnati, became for a short time General Grant's Secretary, for War, then Attorney-General under President Arthur, and later Minister to Austria and Russia. His son, AVilliam Howard, entered Yale College in 1874, and graduated in 1878, at tho ago of 20. Mr. Taft was then a man of tremendous physique—fond of sport,' but avoiding athletics. To-day ho is said to weigh over; twenty stone, and yet withal has over maintained phenomenal energy, physical and' mental, Leaving college, Mr. Taft returned to Cincinnati, and there obtained employment as a law reporter on tho "Cincinnati .Times," at tho affluent stipend of 4s. a day.
