Melbourne, August 19. i- Tho Inter-State Carnival to celebrate tho jubilee of the Australian game commenced in the presence of 6COO spectators. Teams representing the States of the Commonwealth and the Dominion are taking part. In tho inatch New Zealand versus* Now South Wales, the ' Maorilanders commenced with the wind in their favour. New Zealand opened with two behinds, then New South Wales put on threo behinds and a goal, Tho New South. Welshmen were noticeably quicker than their opponents on tho ball, ■and kicltcd with grfcater force and accuracy. Before tho quarter ended, Wilkins (New Zealand) kicked two goals, the second one coming through a clover mark and a good kick. At the first change of ends New Zealand led by five points. Nearly all through the second quarter New Zealand 'wore in troublo. New South Wales finished tho quarter with six goals and six behinds to Now Zealand's two goals and four behinds.
The laat two - quarters, however, put a different. complexion on affairs. New Zealand had much the best of it, and added seven goals and five behinds to two goals and eight behinds. The Maorilanders kicked a goal just on time, and secured victory by a point, tho totals being nine goals and nine behinds to eight goals and fourteen behinds. Tho victors' improvement in the later stages was astounding, and their plucky uphill game found great favour with the. onlookers.
