ANOTHER PACIFIC YOYAGE. FROM SAN FRANCISCO TO SAMOA, GERMAN INVITATION. (by telegraph—press association— corritiaHT.) (Rep. August 19, 10.5 p.m.) London, August 19. Tho "Daily -Telegraph" states that RearAdmiral W: T. Swinburne's Squadron—sis of the largest And most modern armoured cruisers and seven destroyers—will start from San • Francisco on Monday for Samoa, at Germany's invitation.
Thenco tlio squadron will go to San Diego [South-west California) and Magdalena Bay, returning to San Francisco in December.
GERMANY IN THE PACIFIC. Germany and the United States are neighbours in the Samoa group. In going from San Francisco to Samoa the United States cruiser Squadron will be travelling approximately more than two-thirds of the way across the Pacific. No doubt it' \yi(l follow in tho. footsteps of the battleship fledt, going via. Honolulu. The battleship fleet i did not stop at the Samoa group, though' in passing it* afforded residents Of the American-owned island, Tutuila, a good view. The Samoa islands which Germany owns are Upolu and.Savaii. British surrenders of territory in, the Pacifio have been much criticised in Australasia, particularly in the case of the Samoa group. Rear-Admiral Wm. T. Swinburne has been Gommander-in-Chief of the ;United States Pacific Squadron since August 10, 1906. During the Spanish War he served in the North Atlantio fleet, and captured -'the Spanish steamer Miguel Jora. in 1898. He. joined the fleet at Manila, under Admiral Dewey, in February 1899, and was senior officer in command of vessels assisting General Lawton in his oampaign in the Philippines. I
