The president wrote to the librarian of the Christchurch Public Library asking for his opinions of "The Clansman," "Mills of God, and several other books. The men alleged to have been concerned in the '.'sticking-up" cases of May Inst appeared for trial : to-day. Tlia accused, under tho names of Joseph Johnston, Frank Bolton, and James Keegan, wero indicted oii throe counts, with that, on May 17, being armed with offensive wfcapoiis (revolvers), they robbed from Charles Marshall, one purse, one gold ring, one key, and £5 7s. in money. The other counts referred to the same occurrence, but reduced .the charges to robbery, and to stealing from tho person. The accused wore convicted on the major charge. A second indictment , against tha, three men, alleging robbery from the person, was then taken, but tho case was not finished when the Court adjourned.
